Hurricane Katrina's Aftermath

Updated: Mon 10:41 AM, Aug 30, 2010

It's the fifth anniversary of hurricane Katrina's aftermath. Meteorologist Josh Fitzpatrick has the facts and how it impacted our region.

See full size imageWe all remember those catastrophic images five years ago now of hurricane Katrina.  The massive storm surge, the levee breaks, thousands of people left homeless and stranded for days and in some cases weeks.  Storms like Katrina change history and here's why:  It's the costliest, with 81 billion dollars in damages.  It had a storm surge of nearly three stories.  The hurricane produced 43 tornadoes as it moved on shore causing even more damage and loss of life.  Before and during the storm 1.2 million people had to leave their homes and many never returned.  Some have relocated to our area.  More than 18 hundred people lost their lives due to Katrina.  To put that into perspective, that's like everyone in Olive Hill, Kentucky dead!  So, how did Katrina impact our local area?  Well as the storm moved over land it rapidly weakened.  We did have some rain and gusty winds as the remnants passed through.

Here's the path the hurricane took.  The wind field was massive!

New Orleans remains a very vulnerable city but another is Miami
