Ask Josh: Strong October Sun

Meteorologist Josh Fitzpatrick answers one viewer's question about the October sunshine.

Here it is, another picture perfect October weather weekend!  A great time for all the fall festivals going on around our region.  When you think of October, you think of the changing colors, harvest time, the first frost and longer night's.  What many don't think about is sunburn.

One great question I received this weekend is from Patty and she asks, can you still get a sunburn in October when the temps are in the 80's. Is the sun powerful enough to give you a burn?

Believe it or not, the October sun is still strong.  It's just as strong as it is in April this time of year.  So yes, you can still get a sunburn.  Especially on these bright, sunny, blue sky days!  In fact, when I was at the Kentucky Apple Festival in Paintsville on October 3rd I got a little sunburn on my arm.  But I'm so fair complected, I can get a burn during a full moon, ha-ha!

If you're going to be out and about for awhile, make sure you put on the sun screen, even in October.

Keep those great questions coming.  If you have a weather related question you would like for me to answer, either e-mail me directly at or post it in a comment.  Enjoy the great fall weather!
