What was that in the sky last night?

Updated: Wed 11:09 AM, Dec 02, 2009

An interesting weather phenomenon happened last night in the sky and had many people wondering what it was. Meteorologist Josh Fitzpatrick has the answer!

On Tuesday night, our newsroom was flooded by calls from people wondering what in the world was going on with the moon.  Many of you saw a ring or halo around it.  Some folks thought it was a sign of the apocalypse!

Well I have good news!  It's NOT a sign of the apocalypse but a sign of a weather change.

The photo above shows the Lunar Halo (ring around the moon) and is caused by the moon light being refracted or bend by the high, thin, ice crystal Cirrus clouds.  It's a sign of a change in the weather.  In this case, rain for Wednesday and colder Thursday and into the weekend.

Did you see the halo or have a weather related question or comment?  Post them in the comment section below.
