Ask Josh Fitzpatrick: Halo around the moon.

An interesting weather phenomenon happened Saturday night in the sky and had many people wondering what caused it. Meteorologist Josh Fitzpatrick has the answer!

Saturay night I was flooded by calls and emails from people wondering what in the world was going on with the moon.  Many of you saw a ring or halo around it.  Some folks thought it was a sign of the apocalypse!

Well I have good news!  It's NOT a sign of the apocalypse but a sign of a weather change.

The photo above shows the Lunar Halo (ring around the moon) and is caused by the moon light being refracted or bent by the high, thin, ice crystal Cirrus clouds.  It's a sign of a change in the weather.  In this case, rain mid week then colder later in the week with some snow showers.

Did you see the halo or have a weather related question or comment?  Post them in the comment section below.
