Ask Josh Fitzpatrick: No White Christmas 2011 Update

Updated: Sat 4:02 AM, Dec 24, 2011

What's our odds at a white Christmas this year? Will we have one? Meteorologist Josh Fitzpatrick has the answers!

I've received countless questions lately from viewers, my blog readers, Facebook and Twitter followers, "are we going to have a white Christmas this year?"

We all remember how lucky we got last year when we saw snow on the ground Christmas day!  In fact many of you had snow on the ground an entire week before Santa arrived.

Here's a photo I took in Gallia County, Ohio last Christmas morning of the 2" to 3" inches on the ground.

December 2010 was much colder and snowier than normal with a lot of cloudy, cold days and this helped keep the snow from melting.  Last December was our snowiest month of the winter season.  The 16th of the month saw 4"-6" inches over much of the region and that was our largest snowfall for a lot of the area last winter.  I remember standing outside of the WSAZ Huntington studio on 7th Street doing live shots in the snow and one morning made a snow angel on live TV!  It's one of my favorite things to do while covering the snow and cold.

Remember?

So back to the question, will we have snow for this Christmas?  As you can see on the map below, the Ohio, Big Sandy and Kanawha Valleys typically have a 25% percent chance of seeing at least one inch of snow on December 25th.

Overall our odds are low every year.  Usually it has to snow the day or night before Christmas or even on the day itself.  As we know, most snowfalls here don't last long and melt fast.

It looks like our snow drought continues as we go through the New Year.  So my origional forecast a couple weeks ago of no snow this Chirstmas of 2011 for the Ohio, Big Sandy and Kanawha Valleys will hold true.  Perhaps next year...

Do you want snow for Christmas?  Have a memory of a past white Christmas you'd like to share?  Post your comments below.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
