Recently on air I mentioned how much I love the winter season and if I had the power to control the weather (which I don't) I'd have it snow all the time!

Right after that bold statement, I got an e-mail from Donna in Paintsville, KY who says she hates winter and wish it were spring year-round and wanted to know why I love winter so much.

To be honest, I enjoy all the seasons.  But winter is by far my favorite.  I think that's true for most weather folks.  The reason I love winter and it's my favorite season is because of snow!  I'm a huge snow lover!  Growing up in Southern Ohio I remember several big snowstorms.  Many of you know by now, it was the great blizzard of 1993 that got me hooked on meteorology in the first place and is the reason I'm a meteorologist today.  For me, watching snow fall through the air is relaxing.  It's amazing how snow changes our environment.  For example, there's one snow event I remember as a kid in Gallia County where when I went to bed the ground was green, brown and just looked bare and plain.  By morning when I woke up I could tell something was different.  My room was very bright but the sun wasn't out.  As I looked out the window, everything was covered in a thick blanket of white.  The trees were coated with heavy wet snow and silver dollar size snowflakes were falling fast.  Six inches fell overnight creating a winter wonderland.  The landscape was breathtaking!  There's nothing more beautiful this season than Pine trees covered in snow.

The other reason why I love winter is it's a huge challenge to forecast during this time.  As we've seen in the last month, Mother Nature can throw everything at us.  Heavy snow, sleet, freezing rain, flooding and then back to snow again.  Trying to forecast how much snow, ice, rain and when and where can be a nightmare.  But for me and most other meteorologists, it's why we do what we do.  It's all about the challenge and the excitement of winter weather forecasting.

Another reason, winter is fun!  That's if you don't have to drive in ice and go without electricity.  I do not like to see freezing rain and ice storms.  They're devastating and extremely dangerous.  That's the only part of winter I don’t like.  Going back to the fun part, you can ski, snowboard, tubing and go sledding!  Oh and not to forget, making snow angels and snowmen/women.
