National groups are taking to the airwaves in an effort to sway the upcoming special election for West Virginia's governor.

National groups are hitting the airwaves in West Virginia ahead of the special election for governor.

The Republican Governors Association sent out a news release Tuesday with a link to a website Democrat Earl Ray Tomblin's record on issues related to spending and taxes.

Meanwhile, a group called America Works USA, which is funded by the Democratic Governors is going after Republican businessman Bill Maloney. The group criticzes Maloney, a millionaire, for workign to benefit businesses over workers.

Also, Politico released its monthly rankings of the governor's races Tuesday.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The first national groups have taken to the airwaves in West Virginia's special general election for governor.

The Republican Governors Association launched TV and radio spots Tuesday, attacking acting Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.

But GOP nominee Bill Maloney is the target in another TV ad airing Tuesday. It comes from America Works USA, a group funded by the Democratic Governors Association.

The anti-Maloney ad questions his dealings as a Morgantown business owner. The Republican ads fault Tomblin over his 36-year political career.

Maloney struck a similar anti-Tomblin theme last week with the first negative ad of the general election season.

The election is Oct. 4. The attack ads follow campaign finance filings that show Tomblin with a hefty fundraising and cash balance advantage over Maloney.

Meanwhile in Kentucky, Public Policy Polling released a new poll Tuesday in that state's governor race that gives incumbent Steve Beshear (D) a 27-point lead of Republican David Williams.

The breakdown:

Beshear: 55 percent, Williams: 28 percent, independent Gatewood Galbraith: 10 percent.

The pollsters conclude a lot of Republicans are underwhelmed by Williams and are planning to stay home.
