The Charleston Regional Chamber of Commerce is throwing its support behind Earl Ray Tomblin (D) in the special election for governor.
The group made the announcement Wednesday morning, just as state leaders were preparing for the state chamber's annual meeting in White Sulphur Springs.
"Earl Ray Tomblin is a strong and effective leader. As governor, he has – and will continue to – create jobs and lower taxes to benefit the Kanawha Valley and West Virginia,“ said Chamber Chairman Mike Basile in an email announcement. “His vast experience in government and private business makes him an ideal choice to lead our state.”
Bill Maloney (R), has been touting his outsider status and his business acumen as key reasons he should be elected. He'll make his pitch to the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce Thursday (as will Tomblin) when the two make back-to-back appearances in front of an audience of about 700.
The head of the state chamber, Steve Roberts, hasn't said yet how his organization is leaning as far as an endorsement is concerned. During the primary, the WV chamber endorsed both Tomblin and Maloney as well as former Secretary of State Betty Ireland (R).
