The public will get a chance to address lawmakers on the major regulatory bill for drilling in the Marcellus Shale later today at 4:30 p.m. in the House of Delegates Chamber.
What may be most remarkable about the bill is how it seems to have satisfied very few people.
"It's a bad bill and the surface owners do not want it," David McMahon with the West Virginia Surface Owners' Rights Association said.
Del. Mark Hunt (D-Kanawha) says, "We're going to act on those complaints and try to make all of the stakeholders if not happy at least palletable."
The Senate Judiciary Committee will take up its version of the bill today at 9 a.m. The House Judiciary Committee won't start going through it until Tuesday morning, after today's publci hearing. Del. Hunt says legislative staff members are still going through the bill to try to avoid technical errors.
"What we don't want to do is what we've done with some other legislation -- make a mistake and have to come back and fix it two or three times," Hunt said.
