Del. Eric Nelson, the only Republican who publicly has considered a run at the treasurer's seat, filed to run for his House seat again Wednesday.
Del. Eric Nelson (R-Kanawha) won't be the one from his party to take on Treasurer John Perdue (D) next year.
The delegate acknowledged to the Daily Mail in December he was considering a run, citing his 25 years in investment banking.
Perdue's poll numbers have soured since news broke of an FBI investigation into a land deal he was a part of in Mason County. Perdue has not been charged with any crimes, nor has the U.S. Attorney given any indication he will be.
Nelson recognized Perdue is vulnerable this year but decided he couldn't run for statewide office this year. He tole me his campaign for delegate in 2010 was challenging, and he didn't want to interrupt his business to tackle a statewide campaign. He also cited potential stress on his family.
He will seek re-election to his House seat this year. He filed his paperwork with Secretary of State's office Wednesday.
So far, no other Republican names have been floated publicly as potential challengers to Perdue. He's the only candidate who has filed to run for the job this year.
