House Speaker Rick Thompson (D) announced Wednesday he will seek another term in the House of Delegates, with the hope of keeping his job as speaker.
He made the announcement on MetroNews.
Thompson told Talkline host Hoppy Kercheval, "You work so hard to get into the position where you can do good for people and try to make West Virginia a better place and I wanted to try to stay here as long as I can."
There had been speculation in the months following Thompson's failed attempt last spring to secure his party's nomination for governor that he wouldn't seek another term in the House.
Thompson is an attorney from Wayne County. He was first elected to the House in 1980. He returned in 2000.
The announcement follows the news that Thompson's campaign incorrectly mailed fund raiser invitations last week with a return address of "Rick Thompson for Governor."
