Jan 9, 2012- John Perdue, Natalie Tennant File to Run for Re-election

The filing period began Monday morning with several candidates marching to the Secretary of State's office.

Treasurer John Perdue (D) and Secretary of State Natalie Tennant (D) both filed to run for re-election Monday.

Perdue has taken a hit in recent polling after news broke of a federal ivnestigation into a land deal he was involved with in Mason County. There also had been rumors at one point he was considering a run for commissioner of agriculture.

According to a poll released last month by Mark Blankenship Enterprises, "Voters are nearly equally divided as to whether or not Treasurer John Perdue deserves re-election. While 34 percent believe it’s time to give someone new a chance, 31percent believe he deserves re-election. Half of those in Southern West Virginia believe he deserves re-election which is the area in which he receives the most support while 40% of those in the Charleston/Huntington media market say they prefer someone new."

Tennant is in a better position as far as polling goes, with 49 percent of voters feeling she should get another term. But, 28 percent of voters say they'd prefer someone else should have her job. Meanwhile, 23 percent are unsure.

Steve Mineral (D) is the only candidate to file so far for commissioner of agriculture. Gus Douglass (R) announced last year he would not seek re-election after decades in political office.

So far, no word from any of the congressional candidates after last week's federal court ruling that threw out the state's new district map. The state is appealing.

The filing period ends Jan 28.

UPDATE at 2:45 p.m.: Add Attorney General Darrell McGraw (D) and Audior Glen Gainer (D) to the list.
