Sen. Jeff Kessler (D-Marshall) won the battle for Senate President by a vote of 17-11 during the Democratic caucus Monday afternoon.
Senate aides say he'll need to pick up one more vote during the floor session at 6 p.m.
Sen. Brooks McCabe (D-Kanawha) challenged Kessler for the job. He tried to rally the southern senators. Several weeks ago, Sen. Mike Green (D-Raleigh) said he was interested in the president position but later backed off from that.
Kessler has been Acting Senate President since January. He ran the senate while Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin (D) while Tomblin acted as governor. Tomblin was the longest-serving Senate President in West Virginia's history.
