Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) appeared on Face the Nation on CBS Sunday, telling host Bob Schieffer the so-called super committee cannot fail.
Manchin said he's "very frustrated" with the super committee, which appears to be at an impasse over spending cuts and tax hikes.
Manchin asked to be on the bipartisan committee, which is looking at ways to trim more than $1 trillion from the federal defecit. Manchin was not selected but has been vocal about the steps he'd like to see the committee take.
The committee has a Wednesday deadline to agree on a plan, or automatic spending cuts will be triggered.
Manchin's interview was his first appearance on a Sunday morning talk show.
In an interesting exchange, Schieffer asked Manchin if he'd want President Obama to campaign for him West Virginia. Manchin replied, "This is not a team sport."
Of course, the odds of Obama coming to West Virginia during next year's campaign are remote, given that the state has been voting decisively for Republican presidential candidates in recent election cycles.
