In a matter of hours we should know who will be governor of West Virginia...for the next 14 months.

Happy Election Day!

I've just returned from my polling place (Piedmont Elementary in Charleston). As of about 2 p.m., the poll workers told me I was roughly 80th to cast a ballot. They said at other sites, there have been about 100 people.

In early voting, which ended last Saturday, more than 57,000 people cast ballots, according to the Secretary of State's office.

Tonight, I'll be live at Earl Ray Tomblin's HQ beginning on First at Five. Brooks Jarosz will be live with the Bill Maloney camp as well.

You can follow the returns as they come in on our election page. Polls are open until 7:30 p.m.

No doubt, the election has become much more exciting with the new Public Policy Polling survey that shows Tomblin ahead 47-46.

On a side note (it's never too early to look ahead to 2012), the polling firm also found Herman Cain is leading the Republican field in West Virginia.

The results in West Virginia: Cain 24, Gingrich 18, Romney 16, Perry 15, Bachmann 8, Paul 6, Santorum 3, Huntsman 1.

Of course, with the flavor-of-the-week trends in this race, who knows how long Cain will stay on top?
