May 26, 2011- Welcome to WSAZ's Newest Blog: At the Capitol

By: Michael Hyland
By: Michael Hyland is launching a new blog focused on state politics and what our congressional delegation is up to in Washington.

Good afternoon, everyone!

It's truly a fascinating time in our region, with one competitive election after another. In case what's happening in the tri-state isn't interesting enough, our congressional leaders are already looking ahead to 2012, with debate swirling about who will take control in Washington.

With so much going on, we wanted to bring you a new source for political news for people who are interested in more than what you might see on air and to provide a forum for you to talk about what our elected leaders are doing.

In addition, we'll incorporate parts of the blog and your comments into a new on-air segment during First at Five on WSAZ, which will premiere tonight, May 26.

Here, you'll find new and interesting polls, updates on issues our congressional leaders are focused on in Washington, fact checks of advertisements as the campaigns get more intense and much more.

Tonight on WSAZ, we're looking into the role of the Tea Party in West Virginia, following Bill Maloney's come-from-behind win in the Republican primary. Also, former Gov. Gaston Caperton (D) was recently in town and shared his insight on the dynamics of the governor's race. Lastly, we'll introduce you to a new web site by the West Virginia Center on Budget & Policy aimed at helping us all to track how our tax dollars are spent. Check back later for video of tonight's broadcast.

As with any new feature, we'll be getting our bearings as we go along. But, we hope this will be a resource you find useful.

See you on the campaign trail!

-Michael Hyland
