A Day Of Contrasts -- Are You Ready?

Posted: Mon 1:00 AM, Nov 12, 2012

Another run through the seasons today as we start off near summer and finish near winter. Thankfully most other parts of the week will be a little calmer.

Good Monday morning everyone! I hope you were able to enjoy a relaxing weekend of mild sunshine. :-)

...But I also hope you all got a chance to get the rest of that yardwork done. And by that I mean leaf-raking and bagging. If you didn't, then today is going to annoy you a little bit more than it does the rest of us.

A cold front comes streaking across our area today. In the middle of last week, it had appeared to want to show up in the overnight hours between Monday and Tuesday, but now has its sights set on the second-half of the day today. This means the early risers have the best opportunity to get some work done. But, take a look at the differences between one side of the front and the other...

The contrast is the starkest along the I-64 corridor particularly near Huntington. You can't even see the entire 50-degree contour set, and temperatures just might fall 20-30 degrees in just an hour or two. Not a normal way to spend what is typically the warmest hours of the day. That kind of cold air advection will wring out anything left in the air above, which is why nearly all the precipitation is behind the front, primarily where the temperatures fall the fastest.

The winds are gustiest before the front crosses, and since we've got low humidities, warm ground, a ton of dried leaves everywhere, and of course the breezes, fire danger will be at its peak until that rain gets here.

It may not finish as rain either, with that cold air pouring in, we'll be looking at conditions good enough to spit out sleet/snow before it ends later Monday night. To continue the dramatic contrasts, the skies may well be cloudless and full of sunshine when we all wake up Tuesday morning. High pressure pushes back in and returns us to a zonal weather pattern of more seasonable and balanced weather.

Looking forward to the week beyond, it appears a warm ridge continues to stick around through the middle of the country...

However, the "southern track" for storms still seems open for the southeast and coastal regions-- the kind mentioned in the most recent segment of the Winter Season Forecast. (Shameless plug for you to check it out).
