Winter's Last Ride..?

April starts off with some "foolish" hold-outs of winter. It presents more unseasonable cold rather than snow.

Good Monday morning everyone!

Today is April Fool's Day, and I'm trying hard to not get pranked by my children. Getting into work before 2am does wonders for this, if you're interested ;-)

The weather itself is also back to its old tricks. Following Easter's showers, it's unseasonably cold (again).

As the colder air filters in during the day today, we'll see some flurries pop up in the usual spots in the WV mountains, but by-and-large most of us will avoid the risk of flakes. The coldest influx of air comes Tuesday, with the 850mb temperatures getting to -10 C in the Charleston area. This will correspond to morning temperatures in the 20s-- certainly not that great for early attempts at gardening. However, since we've been consistently colder than normal, it's not like anyone truly has had the idea that a typical March/April planting schedule applies.

By the way, my own personal curiousities-- the arena of Climate Change, has an interesting little wrinkle that relates to this. Not yet settled science, the idea here is that the diminishing summer ice pack above the Arctic Circle contributes to a noticeable shift in North Hemispheric weather patterns when it comes to March (and in my personal impression, October as well). Here is a recent blog article (actually translation notes from a different climate scientist) that speaks to what I'm talking about.

Our period of cold weather lasts through Thursday, where-after milder temperatures again filter in.

Looking at the longer range models, we may finally get to call this winter over. Wouldn't that be nice.

Time to shift gears and start complaining about the heat? ;-)
