Good Wednesday everyone and thanks so much for dropping by the blog. A little taste of summer is with us across the tri state over the next few days. It is August, after all. While you are thinking about the summer temps of right now... there is something lurking for late in the weekend and early next week that is stirring up the WOW factor in me!

Before we get to all that... let's break down what is going on now and in the shorter term. Temps today will likely be the warmest of the entire week as thermometers head toward the mid and upper 80s. The humidity levels will be on the increase and this could lead to an isolated thunderstorm or two by late in the day. Whatever develops will show up right here...

A cold front will move toward the area by Thursday with a better chance for some scattered storms with temps back into the middle 80s. More scattered storms will be around for Friday with lower to middle 80s for many areas as our warm and humid pattern rolls on for a few more days. That will come to an abrupt halt this weekend as a VERY strong cold front moves in from the northwest later Saturday into Sunday. This will lead to widespread showers and storms along the front itself.

GFS Saturday Evening

It's what is coming behind that front that is likely to grab a lot of headlines as the chance for record breaking cold air is on the increase for early next week. This happens as we say goodbye to August and hello to September. It is looking like I should be able to get my 40s before the month is over as Monday morning should be quite cool. The models are really going crazy with the potential cold for Tuesday morning, the first day of September. Take a look at the forecast lows from the GFS for early next week....

Told you the WOW factor is starting to kick in!! The model is actually showing temps reaching the upper 30s in some areas for Tuesday morning. Is it overdoing it? Maybe. But, the fact that the model is showing this is for so early in the season is incredible enough. I had said in a post several weeks ago that the analogs were pointing toward the chance for 40s in August and 30s in late September.  It looks like the GFS wants to go ahead and get all that out of the way within a 24 hour stretch and who am I to argue?    Now, I don't know if we will get as cold as the maps above are showing. But, early next week is going to be darn chilly and may threaten record lows.

Highs for the period will be low and mid 70s for Sunday with upper 60s to low 70s for Monday and Tuesday. Fall will be in the air in a big, big way!

We will be watching the tropics over the next few days as Danny is likely to form off the southeastern coast of the US. This storm will likely ride northward up the coast and should be a headline maker as well. Will it be a noisy Tropical Storm or can it get to Hurricane strength at some point before landfall? I guess we will see. Here is the latest from the National Hurricane Center...

TC Activity

Have a great Wednesday and take care.

I am THRILLED with the forecast cooler temps-Chris, do you think the cool weather will be consistent into the autumn season for us, or is this just a fluke? I sure hope we have more cool days coming and less summer-I'm ready for wearing sweaters, drinking hot apple cider and watching scary movies at night with the windows open and a cool breeze coming through-nothing better than the fall (except a big snowstorm!):)
