9:45pm Update
Band of heavy snow moving through eastern Kentucky. Thunder and lightning reported with this band. It will have whiteout conditions and drop a quick inch or two of snow in some areas. Wow!
Take care
8pm Update
Good evening gang. The arctic front is now working quickly across the tri state. Temps are dropping rapidly with roads now beginning to freeze up from west to east. Snows are also increasing with many areas picking up a quick inch or so through Midnight. Winds will also crank up leading to low wind chills and some blowing snows. Road conditions will continue to worsen through the overnight.
Overall... the forecast is right on track for several more inches of snow to fall over the next 36 hours. Take care.
6pm Update
Good evening everyone. The arctic front continues to quickly work eastward across the state and this will cause all the slush and water to freeze up in a hurry. This will result in some nasty travel conditions developing over the next few hours. Snows will begin to fill back in from northwest to southeast this evening and overnight. Widespread 2"-5" totals with locally higher amounts over the next 36 hours. The mountains will see many more inches.
Wind gusts to 30-35mph will be likely across much of the area and this will lead to blowing and drifting snows through Wednesday. This may also create white out conditions at times resulting in some of the worst travel conditions of the entire winter. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories continue to be out for much of the region through Wednesday.

Track the snows moving back in with the regional radars...

You can also track the cold blast moving in from the west...

Keep posting your weather and I will have more updates later this evening. Take care.
Noon Update
Good afternoon everyone. Part one of our winter storm is wrapping up across the region after behaving perfectly. Now comes the second half of the storm and the potential for several more inches of snow to go along with a rapid freeze up this afternoon and evening from west to east as arctic air blasts in.
Much of the tri state made the change to rain this morning and the trend will reverse itself from west to east this afternoon and evening as snows take over. The snows will initially be light and rather spotty... but will rapidly increase later this evening into tonight as the northwesterly flow combines with a strong disturbance moving overhead of us. You can track the switch here on regional radar...

Another helpful tool today will be the near real time temps from from the bluegrass state. This will give you an indicitation of just how close the front is getting to the tri state...

You will be able to see just how strong of a cold front is swinging through. Temps will drop more than 10 degrees in just a few hours behind the front. This will allow for all this slush and moisture to rapidly freeze up causing significant travel problems.
As mentioned... the snows will kick back in this evening and will likely carry us through Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The potential is there for several inches of powdery snow. Here is my snowfall map for additional accumulations during this time...

Winds will increase tonight into Wednesday with gusts of 30-35mph. This will create blowing and drifting snow and wind chills below 0 at times. Travel could become dangerous at times over the next 36 hours.
Keep doing what you are doing in giving us updates on the weather where you live. I will have more updates through the day so check back. Take care.
Previous Update
Good Tuesday everyone. Phase one of our winter storm is well underway with some of everything falling from the sky across the tri state to start the day out. This system is behaving very well so far with things playing out about like we expected in terms of the precipitation types and placement.
The big deal of the day will be to track the rain/snow line as it works to the north. That same line is carrying a period of freezing rain with it and that can cause a lot of headaches. So far... snows have been heaviest across the north with the south seeing a mix to rain. Above freezing temps will continue to slowly lift northward this morning as the snows make the transition to some light rains by late morning and early afternoon as far north as extreme southern Ohio. The damage will be done to the morning commute by that point as roads are very slick this morning. You can track the line here...

Please keep in mind that the radar is only showing where it "thinks" the various forms of precipitation are falling.
For some actual ground truth... I have a series of weather cams for you to check out from different points across the region...

What happens from this point forward? Here is your breakdown...
- A big time arctic front moves quickly eastward across the tri state this afternoon into the evening. This will change the rain back to snow pretty quickly.
- Snows will increase Tonight into Wednesday with a widespread 2-4 inches of additional snow to fall. Higher amounts will be possible in some areas. The higher elevations from southeastern Kentucky toward the West Virginia Mountains will pick up a whole lot more.
- Temps will plummet behind the front. Readings will drop 15 degrees in just a few hours and will wind up in the teens by late evening. Winds will gust to 30-35mph creating wind chills dipping below 0 at times. The same winds will also creating blowing and drifting snows.
- The weather here Wednesday will just be flat out wicked!
- Snow showers and flurries should hang tough all the way into Thursday morning.
The overall weather pattern for the next few weeks will feature VERY cold temps with periodic snow chances. The snow that falls over the next few days has a great shot at still being on the ground in many places a week or two from now. The problem is... you may not see it because it gets covered up by new snows. Some snow showers and flurries will be possible later Friday and Saturday with the potential for a system to dive in here with accumulating snows Sunday and Monday...
