Good Thursday everyone and thanks for checking out the blog. This is the time of year when we begin to shift gears from winter mode to spring mode and that means thunderstorms and the threat for severe weather start to take center stage. The threat for some booming storms will be with us over the next few days and that is something for us to keep an eye on and that is just what the blog will be doing.

We have talked and talked about the overall setup that finds low pressure across the plains states. This SLOW moving low is going to continue to sit and spin for a few more days and this puts us squarely into the warm sector. That means very mild temps roll on with temps today and Friday back into the 60s with 70 or a touch better possible for areas getting some decent sunshine. This also means an increasing threat for showers and storms.

The best threat for storms today will be just to our west where some severe weather will be possible as close by as central and western Kentucky. Here is the latest all inclusive severe weather map from the Storm Predication Center...

SPC Products Overview

Take a look at how photogenic this storm is and at what a reach it has across the country here on Water Vapor...

Current Goes east eastern us water vapor image

It looks like a line of showers and storms will come rolling in from west to east later today with the best chance across the western parts of the tri state. You can track the line here on regional radar...

Friday will see a break in the action to start out the day before showers and storms get cranking again during the afternoon and evening hours. Here is what the GFS looks like during that time...

Friday Afternoon

Friday Evening

That takes us into the weekend and a much colder pattern that will set up. More on and off showers will be with us during this time and those will likely hold strong into Monday. Highs for Sunday and Monday will likely be in the chilly 40s. Areas across the West Virginia mountains will need to watch for the potential for some high water. Snow melt will combine with the rains to produce some rises on streams. I am hopeful we can get through this without any widespread flooding, but we will keep an eye on it.

The good news is that the sun and milder air will push in here for the middle and end of next week.

I will have updates on the storms as needed so make sure you check back. Have a great Thursday and take care.

Posted by: pj Thanks Matt...comments like yours are greatly appreciated, nothing like an eye witness to keep us on our toes. Thanks to Chris as always, have loved this warm weather.

Posted by: Matt Most of the snowcover has melted here in Beckley..can't believe it took until Thu...after several days in 50s & 60s. Creeks & streams are raging rivers right now here w/water still pouring out of the mountains. I fear for those in flood plains this wknd as all this runoff hits the rivers. For those in the valleys near water, please be cautious. If you haven't been to the WV mts this winter, you probably don't realize just how much SNOW WE HAD on the ground. Now it's all coming your way in liquid form. Take care and be safe!

Posted by: Chappy Why is WSAZ's forecast for Sunday and Monday a good 10-12 degrees colder than the other forecasts I have seen?

Posted by: Asthmatic Haters? We freak at Flowering trees and pollen. So spring is season more of us are ill, in hospital off school or work or heaven help us croak! So yes spring is not popular among us!

Posted by: Tim the haters clearly have too much time on their hands!

Posted by: Anna This weather is great!!! Keep it coming.

Posted by: Anonymous It's a new dawn - it's a new day - it's a new season for Haters! Excited to see what the haters bring on for Spring 2010

Posted by: Jeff Chris, can u tell me what the yellow line represents in the SPC Activity Chart. Is that representing that large low pressure that is moving thru with its past, present, and future track of that low? If so, wow, that thing is all over the place. Neat to look at indeed.

Posted by: lindak looks like the main line of storms is splitting, one rotating past us towards Cincy and the other southward....maybe the rain will hold off until late tonight...

Posted by: Barbara Hooray! no snow in the forecast!!!! I am loving this spring preview!!

Posted by: annie spring is in the air, enjoying it very much!

Posted by: Pat Chris I really appreciate your blog on the weather. I wish I understood more about the maps above.

Posted by: Storm It is 1:24 AM here in Cottageville and the temp. is 36 degrees. Hey Chris keep the flooding but bring on the thunderstorms.
