Good Thursday everyone and welcome to March Madness! We all know the basketball kind of madness that grips the country and especially the tri state. But... there is another kind of madness that we can sometimes get into around here this time of year and that comes from the weather. Your friendly weather dude has been, for a few weeks now, talking about the possibility of another taste of winter before true spring sets in. That taste may come later this weekend or early next week.

Between now and then... the weather is looking AWESOME! Highs today and Friday will warm well into the 60s across the board with a 70 possible Friday. Mainly sunny skies will be with us, though some early morning clouds will be noted out there today in some areas.

Saturday should be a very warm day as well as temps warm toward 70 in as sunny skies will be noted again.

A blast of winter will be working into the plains states by Friday and Saturday and will bring a lot of snow to some folks out there. It is this blast of cold that will be working eastward toward the region by Saturday night and Sunday and would carry over into Monday. The question is... how does this all work itself out? Some of the models have been bringing the front through here much quicker with cold and some snow by Sunday morning. Other models are slower with this as they develop a second low pressure along the front as it swings through here. That setup would bring the cold in by Sunday night into Monday and would have a better shot at putting down some accumulating snows during that time.

The NAM is on the fast track with the cold and snow.

NAM Sunday Morning

Check out what a temp gradient along the front...

As you can imagine... the NAM is also showing a quick transition from rain to snow...

Here is what the NAM thinks the snowfall will look like by Sunday morning...

While that is impressive... I have a hard time seeing much accumulation with a warm ground and temps above freezing. It's cool to look at though.

The other scenario is slower with the cold coming in as low pressure "pops" just to our east. This would give us a chance for snow Sunday night into Monday. You can see this on the European Model...

The GFS is looking very similar to the European with the slower setup...

Monday Morning

Here is what the snowfall map from the GFS looks like through Monday...

We will see how it all plays out. But the moral of the story is... Old Man Winter may still have another trick up is sleeve later this weekend and early next week so enjoy these next few days.

Have a great Thursday and take care.

Posted by: Beth NO, no, no, this will not happen. I won't let it. I am a snow lover, but once March hits, I am ready for spring. I want to keep the sunshine.

Posted by: toney hi 1 more time from the town of wayne. it is 65 and beautifully sunny. to those of u saying you can not get 3 inches on monday because it is 70 plus on saturday and the ground is too warm. you can go back to 1996 i do believe where it was 70 degrees on a night in march about 8pm and the next mornibg at 5am it was raining then at 6am big flakes of snow was falling and then 3hours later we had 5 wet inches of snow on the ground, although it did not last very long it did happen. it can happen, not likely too but march is march and this is march madness. not trting to make liars out of anybody but i have seen it happen firsr hand and oh by the way i have seen it in april also, although a very rare event, it does happen. it would not surprise me to see a surprise snow next week at all especially monday night with the cut off low, maybe monday morning if the low speeds up more than the models are showing. thank you and god bless you all.

Posted by: sherry u know i use to like winter & snow [cause we never could get enough of it] but now im tired of snow period & while it's warm outside we take it for granted [witch is get out & enjoy while u can]

Posted by: Mrs. C With the way the weather has been so far, anything is possible. Thanks, Chris for all of the updates.

Posted by: Grumpy Grandpa Even I am happy about this sunshine! I do like a good garden rain, however.

Posted by: hello just don't see 3 inches , when it will probably be 74 here on sat. ground will be to warm.

Posted by: JIM Chris, I just hope OMW doesn't have another Noreaster up that sleeve like he did in 1993(17 years ago when he dropped 22 inches on the region). Could that happen?

Posted by: Kyle I want more snow!

Posted by: Julia Lett I am ready for Spring and warmer weather ! Please, no more winter until Thanksgiving 2010.

Posted by: Ceredo fan We are ready for anything around here, Chris!

Posted by: PW Spring, sunshine, warm temperatures...priceless! More snow and cold...YUCK...I say NO! Go Around!

Posted by: Bob Bring on the snow! I aint ready for Spring just yet. This storm looks like it could be a really big snow for Huntington.

Posted by: Jo I can't believe it might snow again! I am quite tired of it. When is it going to turn green?????

Posted by: Matt I would imagine this would be the winter for late day antics from Old Man Winter...at least in the mts..esp w/true Arctic air actually sitting over S Canada which hasn't happened a lot this winter. Will be fun to watch...I remember in Apr 1987 we had a nice cutoff low to form that brought us 2 ft over 4 days in Beckley. anything's possible!

Posted by: #1 Fan Chris, I love winter and I love your blog..... but, I'm over winter for this year. So if you could make a call to the weather Gods and let them know that I'm over it.... that would be greatly appreciated!!! LOL, seriously though thanks so much for keeping up up to date on whats going on. Your blog is the first thing I read in the morning!!

Posted by: Melissa Ratliff I believe Old man Winter is lossing his strong hold. I believe that Spring is fighting hard to stay. Would love to see one last snow in April before Spring really sets in. Chris keep us updated.
