Good Wednesday to one and all. We have a spring-like next few days ahead of us and that will be followed by a little blast of winter to start the coming weekend. That means we have thunderstorms and snow showers all rolled into one little neat forecast.

Today looks to be a rather windy and mild day with a mix of sun and clouds. Temps will run well into the 50s and may flirt with 60 before all is said and done. A couple of showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening… especially across the south and east. The Storm Prediction Center has even been talking about the possibility of a severe storm trying to fire up across the Tennessee Valley. Here’s the area they are keeping an eye on today…

Latest Day 1 convective outlook

The setup for Thursday is one that has a better shot at creating some strong or severe thunderstorms. Temps will really warm up with mid and upper 60s common. Some areas may touch 70 degrees before the day is over. Winds will be rather gusty as a storm system works into the Ohio Valley. Moist and unstable air will be drawn northward out ahead of this low pressure and that should be the spark to get some storms to pop.

The NAM model is showing this unstable air coming fairly far north into our region. Take a look at the Lifted Index forecast…

Negative numbers this time of year usually spell thunderstorms and can often help some stronger boomers to develop. We will keep an eye on this for late Thursday into Thursday night.

Much colder air them pushes in on Friday with temps falling into the 30s during the afternoon. This cold air will likely be accompanied by some snow showers and flurries and the GFS is even showing the potential for some sticking snow Friday night…

Nothing like thunderstorms and snow within a 24 hour period!

The pattern into next week is one that will feature a couple more big storms rolling their way across the country and those will need to be watched to see what kind of weather they bring our way.

Have a great Wednesday and take care.

It's 11.30 pm and 46F.. around 9pm someone turned on the firehose for 5 minutes. Torrential rain. 20 minutes later we saw the first distant lightning and heard the first rolling thunder so I turned on the SkyScan detector.. NOT something I usually do in February, and pulled the plug on the laptops! It's been raining heavily, on and off, for the past hour-and-a-half but should be past inside of the next 20 minutes or so.

Goodbye "winter.". Anybody else smell spring? I'm just a little nervous about the lack of winter. Last spring was miserable... Maybe this will be warm, balmy, and relatively dry??

Hope you are feeling better Chris! I hope we can get at least one noteworthy winter storm in the Huntington/Ashaland area before this extended Fall season gives way to spring :) Really looking forward to heat and humidity...NOT!

Ah, I love storms AND snow, as long as everyone stays safe. We really need a good winter storm to help kill of the insects before this summer. That, and I selfishly want to look at some pretty snow. Thanks for the update!

Thanks for heads up on possibilities of snow Chris. You do a great job. But I think I better wait and see about that potential for sticking snow.

Good morning everybody! Chris, I hope that you are feeling better! To brighten the mood I'll say that my crocus are blooming! Their little purple flowers were so pretty yesterday in the sunshine! Looks like spring is on it's way. Not looking forward to thunderstorms and snow all in 24 hours though. That is a shock to the system. No wonder so many folks are sick! Anyway have a great day and stay safe everybody!
