Tired but elated, I just got back from a trip to NYC last night. I've been there several times and can't say enough great things about that city. We saw a couple of Broadway shows, went to a Yankees game (had awesome seats at the new stadium) and did a lot of walking, shopping, drinking and of course... eating. But wait just a minute. Hold the presses. Start spreading the news.... What was "new" for me this time around in New York? The city has done what West Virginia could not. Calorie counts now have to be posted on menus. You'll remember that state lawmakers tried this last session and couldn't make it happen. There were so many arguments "for" and "against". I never felt too strongly about it either way until I saw it in action. In New York, the calorie counts for food and drinks are posted everywhere. Restaurants and bars, even Yankees stadium. I've never been clueless about how fattening certain foods are but this REALLY opened my eyes. Even though I know that french fries are the thighs worst enemy, it was hard to order some at the ballpark when the menu listed their calorie count at 1360! I quickly passed on the fries and opted for the lowest fat-laden item on the menu. A Nathan's hot dog weighed-in at 360 calories. It was good and in the grand scope of things, relatively guilt-free. I just couldn't enjoy those french fries knowing that they were basically an entire day's caloric intake in one small serving. At dinner in Manhattan, I couldn't order a meal that was almost 2,400 calories when there were dinners listed at 720. This, my friends, is some real food for thought. I know that many will see those calorie counts and continue to order whatever they want and that's ok. However, I also know that it will help others decide to make a healthier choice. The point is to put the information out there and give people the option. Now we'll just have to wait until next year and see if state lawmakers agree. Jessica

Back safe and sound and guess what? We saw Wicked and ate at Carmines! Wow, I laughed when I saw your post, since we ended up at both places! We had a great time. We mostly stuck to the deli's since their prices and food were good, the one next to our hotel, The UN millenium, had a good breakfast with fresh fruit for about 3.75 and that's cheap for NY. I figure I walked about 100 miles all total, and there you must walk fast. I grew up in a city, not NY, but a city, and I miss the energy, and NY has a lot of it! These acrobatic dudes lined my daughter up with about 5 other people and did flips over all 5 at the same time down at Battery Park, got some great pictures including one of her and the naked cowboy, like I said we had a blast. Thanks anyway! I'll have to say NY has the best looking cops I've ever seen.
Posted by: Jessica Debbie, I'm so sorry I haven't checked the blog in a few weeks. We've been stretched a little thin around here with summer vacations. You can buy discount theater tickets at the ticket stand in Times Square. If you want to see a good show check out "Wicked" on Broadway. There's also a really good Italian restaurant named "Carmine's". It's in Times Square. You should also head over to Rockefeller center and check out the "Top of the Rock." Have a great time and BE SAFE! Posted by: Debbie well Jessica, I'm off to Ny in the morning, didn't get any of your imput, but I guess I'll figure it out for myself. Sure hope I don't get rolled. Posted by: Keith Take me to NYC, please! Posted by: Jimbo I love NY too! I got rolled there and liked to never got out of town alive. Posted by: josh id love to travel with Jessica....my favorite time of the day, when she comes on the news! Posted by: susieq I love NY!!! Posted by: Carolyn I'd still like to know who jessica travels with. Posted by: Don So.....Are we going to have to wait another month before your next entry? Posted by: Debbie Jessica, I will be going to the Big apple soon for the first time, any tips on restaurants, or must sees? I don't care for MLB Posted by: Robyn I couldn't understand the reasoning behind this not passing, considering Huntington's new reputation of being the fattest city in the nation. Our tricounty areas, for the most part, are eating themselves to death, and with the recession it is getting harder and harder to find natural, healthy, organic foods. My local grocery store is no longer carrying many of products I choose to feed my family. Now, nobody is protesting; however, smoking and drinking are subjects that will get people fired up (pun intended). Thank you for your positive example. Posted by: Lorre Wilson Posting calories on menus is a great idea - reality of what we are eating. I think we should contact our local & state officials - let them know this is a POSITIVE change! Posted by: Anonymous Hope you had fun Jess, I agree the fries aren't worth the 1300 calories, however with all the great restaurants in New York, I do hope you at least threw caution to the wind once and had something great! It's really what you do daily, if you eat right 95% of the time, you can cheat 5%, (most of us anyway) I think the price of admission to MLB would put me off more than the food would, but hey, I'm cheap. Posted by: Carolyn Jessica, who do you travel with? Seems everytime you post about a trip you say "we". Posted by: B I visited the Big Apple back in March and loved seeing the calorie count on the menus. It was so logical to choose the three hundred calorie lunch versus the 2,000 calorie snack. When I came back the Mountain State I was so excited that lawmakers had the chance to sign a bill into legislation that could actually help West Virginian's to make healthier decisions. How disappointing that the bill did not make it in this time around. That's just one more excuse for me to head back to New York City-any chance I get! Posted by: CarlyR Agreed! People forget sometimes that the basic issue isn't about eating healthy, it's about making INFORMED decisions about what you ingest. Sure, it's common sense that french fries and cake are bad for you, but there are plenty of salads that are just as bad. Hopefully, WV lawmakers will get their acts together before it's too little, too late. Posted by: dfromwv being informed is a good thing.then ,as responsible adults , we can chose . usually the fries but hey, i got a choice. good job jess. |
