An Up and Down Pattern Ahead

After seeing a very wet and gloomy past couple of days, it is nice to look forward to a beautiful weekend ahead. However, storms are set to return next week...

After seeing widespread showers and storms the past couple of days, we saw a beautiful ending to the work week with highs in the 80s under mostly sunny skies. A dry and warm pattern is looking to build over the weekend. Here is a look at the jet stream forecast for the weekend...

Notice how the lines in the above image are building a ridging pattern over our area. This is referred to as a "ridge" in the jet stream, which typically brings warm and dry conditions. Hence, with this ridge overhead, the weekend will bring highs in the mid to upper 80s under mostly sunny skies.

Below is the forecast for precipitation in our area over the weekend...

On Saturday (upper panel), we will see a few pop-up showers in areas south and west of our region, but we are looking to stay dry with a high pressure system blocking the moisture flow. By Sunday (lower panel), the showers stay even further south and west of the area.

By the next work week, we will see a shift in the pattern. The high pressure system at the surface shifts east, and we also see the weekend ridge in the jet stream start to erode...

This jet stream forecast for the work week shows stream lines that are flatter, moving west to east without strong bumps. This is considered a "zonal" pattern, which allows for systems to approach from the west and pass through rather quickly. Consequently, in this pattern, we typically see storm after storm for several days.

The strength of the storms will have to be determined as we get closer to the work week. Regardless of their strength, conditions are going to gloomy. Therefore, if you have the opportunity to, you should get outside and soak up the sun this weekend before the dark storm clouds return!

Have a great weekend!
