Spring Begins But A Taste of Winter Lurks

This past winter has been rough; but, is it really over?

Today is the First Day of Spring; however, the forecast for next week seems more winter-like. A low pressure system is expected to strengthen to our southwest, and as it moves northward along the east coast Tuesday, our region will see a chance of rain/snow mix.

The top image shows the GFS outlook for Tuesday. Note how the bulk of the moisture stays south and east of our region; however, there are some inconsistencies with this moisture placement with each new model run (and between the different models). This is something that will have to be monitored.

Furthermore, the models expect arctic air to return to our area next week with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s! The temperature profile above is of the 850 mb level and shows a strengthening northwest flow on Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning. As a result, there is a chance of upslope snow being produced in the higher elevations during that time period.

Before this heads our way, enjoy tomorrow with highs reaching into the 60s once again due to a warm front.
