Sunday Football Fury: Like Father, Like Daughter

My Dad and his side of the family live in Superior, Wisconsin where 3 things will always ring true. They love beer, cheese and the Green Bay Packers. OK, 4-wheelers and fishing too, but that's a topic for another blog. On game days, the words "He Favred it" are used more often than "Hello" or "Goodbye."

So it probably comes as no surprise that I love the Packers too. I used to wear my #4 Favre jersey on Sundays, the ever-dedicated fan. When Brett got braces, I had braces so I felt that we shared a common but deep bond. I was certain that someday we would meet and get married. I've given up on that dream, but I haven't given up on my favorite QB.

Last night I became annoyed with my friend when he dared to speak while Favre was giving a pre-game interview.

"SHH!" I shouted. "BRETT is TALKING!"

So, if you are a fan, you can probably guess that I was more than a little upset when they lost to the Giants last night in OT and killed their shot at the Superbowl. Upset isn't really the best word to describe it, but I don't want you to think that I'm a total maniac.

Now, here comes the truly ugly part. I was yelling so loud during the game I was certain my neighbors would call the police in fear that I was the victim of domestic violence. I even fell to my knees at one point, pounded on the floor, and yelled at the players to "USE SOME COMMON SENSE!" I don't think they heard me.

When the game ended, I was sad and I was silent. I didn't bother to call my Dad for a post-game chat because I knew it wouldn't be a happy conversation.

So, I waited until this afternoon, to give him some time to relax. Here's how the conversation went word for word.

Me  (trying to keep the tone of my voice light and nonchalant) : "So, Dad, what did you think about the Packer's game last night?"

Dad: "Jessica, I wanted to kick Favre's (expletive)!"

Me: "I was so upset. I wanted to cry."

Dad: "After they lost, I shut off the TV, left the room, and kicked the washing machine."

Me  (somber and serious): "I totally understand."

I wanted to tell him that I was going to write about him on my blog, but he's never used the internet and has never heard of a blog. I'm sure he won't mind though. He's clearly the voice of reason in world full of chaos :)

Posted by: Jessica Mary, I was so sad the day he announced his retirement. When we showed the videoof him crying on My Z, I almost cried too. Packers football will not be the same.

Posted by: MARY JESSICA DO YOU THINK FAVRE QUIT BECAUSE YOU THREW YOUR CHEESEHEAD AWAY?

Posted by: Joshua Dear Jessica I'm from Wisconsin also(Colombus), my uncle lives in Oshkosh and my Grandparents live in Beaver Dam and I also have other cousins, Aunts, and Uncles all over the place. It's been a while since I've seen them all and have been meanin' to go up there and see them all esoecially my Grandparents they are getting up in age you know. I watched some of the game but not all of it. I was at a friends house and we were discussing the superbowl and we all agreed that it was going to be the Giants and New England in it. The giants were just a better team than Green Bay. I believe that Brett Farve is just about past his prime and not exactly washed up yet but they need to start working around him(but that's just what I think)

Posted by: Eric Hi Jessica, its awesome to read that you react the same way I do while watching my Steelers Play! Since the Steelers were out I was hoping that Favre Could win the SB and retire on top, now that GB is out I am praying the Pats lose!

Posted by: steve i have the perfect solution where you can take out your frustrations for charity, raise some supporters, enter the "Rough and Rowdy" contest in Williamson on February 1 and have each of your opponents where a Giants jersey......i'll even like it since as an Eagles fan, you'll be hitting on a team that i will never route for......BOOOOOO Giants!!!!!!!

Posted by: Brian Come on Todd, think positive! Super Bowl XC: Detroit Lions vs. Tokyo Executives! (I'm a Bengals fan, being optimistic is what I do.) And Jessica, I'm sure all your neighbors' concerns about domestic violence disappeared when they heard "Use some common sense!"

Posted by: joshua It's hard to not let your emotions show for your team. I am a Florida Gator. It was easy in 2007 when they won the national title against Ohio State. But this year was so hard! What's funny is my 2 year old does the "Gator Chomp" and throws his hands in the air when Tim Tebow scores a touchdown. Its hard when your team loses. I really wanted to see Brett Favre do well. I think he's a great guy, a great quarterback and an great role model! It's harder when Favre or Tebow (for me) loses because they are such athletes and great football players. I have a feeling my son Max will be just like his daddy when it comes to Florida Football. But hey, is that so bad?? I mean, after all, it is a "Gator Nation"! Go Gators!

Posted by: Candace I am a girl and a huge packers fan like my dad. IT has always been tradition dad and i watch Brett Favre play on Sundays or Mondays. I make the dinner and we watch Favre work his magic. I cried that lost Sunday night and especially to the Giants. My dad and I have nto spoke about yet or I do not think ever will. It is great to know there are other girls out there that love football and actually know something about it. Go Packers!

Posted by: Penny Jess I am cracking up. I refuse to get this emotional about GAMES! :-) It's entirely my Dad's fault- his career in football, living through the euphoric ups and agonizing downs of it, knowing the down periods could mean moving AGAIN... well, it affects a little girl. And to Barbara below-- my dad also played for the Packers in the '40s... just one year, I Googled him, it was '48. Maybe the two knew each other? Dad (Perry Moss) also was an assistant coach w/ the Packers, some time in the 70s. Very cold, there! Anyway, Go Pats, I suppose!

Posted by: Barbara I too am a big Packers fan. My Dad played for the Packers in the 1940's under Curley Lambeau He played for Marshall. He is in the Marshall Hall of fame. His name was Robert Adkins. Dad died in 1997. I miss those phone calls when Green Bay plays. Barbara Wallis

Posted by: paul jessica,it is sad to see the packers come this far just to get beat in ot by a field goal but we still have hope that the patriots will win

Posted by: Ken Now you know how I feel when the Ky wildcats lose, It hurts like having a tooth pulled without Novacain. LOL

Posted by: Mark I too was pulling for the Packers. I am sick of the Mannings, NFL royal family. Go Patriots! Todd the weatherguy, I can relate to you, me being a Browns fan. If they ever reach the superbowl it probably won't be until your Lions do, or even later.

Posted by: steven shaffer its like sliced cheese to me, and favre really did fart in the game... no offense and 2 ints.... go;s to show the laumbeau leap doesnt always work for you,,, go pack next year we;ll get it

Posted by: Todd - WSAZ weatherguy Be thankful you aren't a Lions fan. My Dad and I have already accepted the fact that the Detroit Lions will reach the Super Bowl the same year the first team from Japan will make it. I'm willing to guess there will be a whole bunch of roman numerals with C's and L's in the Super Bowl title.

Posted by: Jose I wish that you have the same passion for the Herd as you do for the Packers and I will enjoy more your beautiful smile in the news

Posted by: Debbie Now we know where the scratch and dents come from that they sell! I too wanted the packers to win, but honestly I don't think either team could beat the Pats. Just my opinion. I've never been a big pro sports fan but, Brady makes it almost an art, he's amazing, even though I know Sunday was not his best game, he's fun to watch, and I'm not even talking about his looks.

Posted by: James My wife (who likes football too--awesome wife!) jokingly makes me take an oath before Mountaineer and Steelers football games. Raise your right hand and repeat, "I (insert name) will remember that this is a game and that I will not yell and scare the cats, kick the furniture or hit any inanimate objects no matter what the outcome." It's better when she does it. Anyway, I was very good during the Pitt game and the Indianapolis/Steelers game. All I can say is "Go, Giants!"

Posted by: Steve Jessica, I love the passion you show for your Packers. Will you please come over and watch a UK basketball game with me so you can explain to my wife that he really does do some good to yell and scream at the TV, and that yes, the players do hear you. :)

Posted by: Judy Hi Jessica, I was just "sick" when the Packers lost. I couldn't believe it...really. They are such a great team but I think the cold got to the "old man"...I know 38 isn't old but it is in football. Hope he plays another year. Hey, give the old man credit...he has started every game during his career in "Packerville". Now, my first love is the Steelers and second the Packers.

Posted by: Jennings Jessica, I understand your pain. I am a passionate Steelers fan myself and everytime the Steelers do something stupid in the playoffs, I scream at the TV and say things that would make a nice lady such as yourself blush. My favorite memories are the AFC Championship Games where I would throw my Terrible Towel at the TV everytime those (expletive) Patriots would score against the Steelers. At least it wasn't the remote. Anyway, I hope Brett Farve returns and gets one more chance to go out with that second ring.

Posted by: Anonymous Jessica, I received a similiar call last night in Ky. So you was not the only one in the area showing support for the packers. You need to start working more in the ashland area.

Posted by: Gregg Sorry about your Dad's washing machine, but Home Depot usually has good sales in February. I'm just now coming to grips with the Steeler's loss and just wanted someone to kick the (washing machine) out of the the Patriots. If we don't do it by or in the Playoffs next year, I'll cheer-on the Packers to do it for us. Someone has to!!

Posted by: Philip I bet your unlucky friend never got "Favred after the game.I was hoping Favre would go out a winner and retire, but I bet he'll be back.....you sound as passionate about your team as I do though

Posted by: Laura I WAS ALSO DISAPPOINTED, I'M A BIG PACKERS FAN. GLAD TO HEAR THAT U ARE ALSO. I'VE LOST ALL INTEREST IN SUPER BOWL NOW.
