"Bug" me not.

We've had more sickness in the newsroom over the last few weeks than I can ever remember. The list of people calling off grows longer by the day. I was out Friday because I woke up that morning and felt like I had been run over by a truck.  Actually, I felt like I had been run over by a truck and cracked in the head with a baseball bat.

It made me wonder. Is this payback for not getting a flu shot?  I skipped out on it this year, and now I (along with my co-workers) must pay the price. Despite the "germaphobes" madly running around the newsroom with cans of disinfectant spray, we are all passing along the flu to each other.

I remember when I was in elementary school and would "fake" getting sick so that I could avoid an evil bully at school (we ALL did it, so don't be judgmental). Usually my mom knew better and would send me packing. However, now that I'm an adult, I feel tremendous guilt for missing work (is that normal?) I think it's from faking it when I was younger. So now, if I call off work, I have to wonder "Do they think I'm faking it?"

I can only take comfort in knowing that a lot of other people called off on Friday too. Unfortunately we weren't all having a party at my house and "skipping work." I say this because we did that in high school and once again, I got caught. It seems the secretary was tipped off when me and my group of friends all got "sick" on the very same day. So, the school called my house and I tried to fake my mom's voice. I told the secretary (in between giggles) that my daughter was very ill and wouldn't be coming in to school.  Somehow she just didn't think I sounded like my mom and called her at work. She came home and found people running out the back door. Things got pretty ugly from there.

You know, some things just stay with you, like the flu (for several days) and childhood memories of bad deeds (for several years.)

Wishing you all well!

Jessica

Posted by: John The flu shot didn't work this year. I took it for the first time in my life this year and was told it doesn't cover the virus that is going around so...I developed the flu, it turned into bronchitis, which caused me to dehydrate and they say that caused a stone to start moving (my first) and on and on. Remember Humble Pie's 30 Days In The Hole? That's how long I've been ill with the 'bug'. No, the flu shot didn't help.

Posted by: Anonymous Echinacea or more commonly known as the purple cone flower is the best thing for the cold and flu season. Take two in the morning and two at night and you'll be much better by the next day. I promise.

Posted by: shelby One thing no body realizes is how easy it is for the little one's to get it. My 8mo. girl was in the hosp. with RSV. Her doc said there is a huge increase this year and parents that have older kids that get sick should stay away from their siblings that are 1 and under, mostly if they are running a fever. My 7 yr old got it and gave it to her before we realized it. So please everyone keep an eye on your kids health too. My husband got it and drank about 1/2 cup of pickle juice every 6 hrs. and by the next day he wasn't sick anymore! Sounds nasty to me but hey it worked. Hope everyone feels better soon.

Posted by: MARY I worked as an RN on the "FRONTLINE" at the VA hospital in HTGN for 16 years.. After being exposed to so many things, being accussed of over using sickleave (when we were exposed to everything under this sun in 15 year) I haven't been sick with any resp or bowel problems since I got out of Nursing...

Posted by: Brian Wellllll, I have been wanting to flood all public buildings with Listerine to deal with this problem, but does anybody listen to me? Nooooooooo! It kills germs by the millions on contact, people!! ON CONTACT!! (giggle)

Posted by: Andrea I know what you mean by being sick. I have been sick 4 times so far this winter and I don't know if I can handle any more colds. This is the most I have been sick in one winter and every cold I have had has not been no little one. I also remember those "fake" sick days in school, I think it is a way of paying us back for them. Because I don't remember being this sick all the time when I was younger. Hope everyone gets feeling better!

Posted by: Jeff Our call volume for "flu like symptoms" has increased dramatically in the last few weeks. I'm hoping I'm not getting it too. Pray for a quick Spring.....

Posted by: Eric Hi Jess, I have had this Flu since the day after the Super Bowl, it had let up for about a day and now I cant shake it! Dont feel any Guilt for missing work as it happens to all of us, take care!!!

Posted by: Amberly Everyone from my area has the flu right now including me. I don't remember ever feeling this sick and it seems as though it's never going to go away.

Posted by: Phil a woman "faking it" no way ;)

Posted by: brad Jess, it totally would have worked it you hadn't said the following: Jessica: Hello, Principal Andrews Principal: Yes, who is this? Jessica: This is my mother! lol....blondes....what are you gonna do! Im just joking! I remember that party. Its me Brad. The guy who you got locked in the closet with....hope all is well. I'm a big fan!!! lol... Ok people, this was totally a joke, so dont take it seriously. Just having fun with my girl Jess!

Posted by: Sue Yeah, it is normal feeling guilty for missing work but try not to because the stress can mess with your immune system. Besides, a careful ear can tell the difference between someone faking sick and someone who can't move out of bed and is two steps away from death. No one wants to see (ok, maybe some sadistic boss wants to see) someone crawling in on all fours coughing and wheezing "I'm here. I made it.". Oh, and thanks for paragraph two. I got a mental picture and Diet Pepsi almost came out of my nose. I hope you are feeling better!

Posted by: Tina I am just getting over having type b flu...I am going on almost 2 weeks of having it, plus having a migrain on top of that. I thought I was going to die!!!! My daughter Journey had just got over RSV when I became ill, I thought I was just tired from taking care of her on her restless nights. My husband then got the flu and he had a brain anyurism June of this past year..now he has seizures, and due to the high fever he came down with he started having seizures during having the flu...we are all getting better now. I have a 6 year old that I made go live with my parents until the flu was gone and I could disinfect the whole house.. Take care hope all feels better soon!

Posted by: Paula Jessica, I had a day much as you describe your Friday----I felt like I had arthritis in every joint of my body, could not walk without great difficulty, had nausea, a barking cough, and slept approximately 22 hours (and I am never ill)! A few days later, I realized my daughter had just had Fifth Disease, which is relatively harmless in children....don't know if there is a connection, but my research showed that adults sometimes manifest a type of Fifth Disease as arthritis/flu-like symptoms. Hummmmm.....I took several days to begin to feel well again, and am still tired from it! Hope you are feeling better today!

Posted by: Debbie Jess, Jess, Jess. NEVER play hookie at your own house! LOL. And yes there is someone who doesn't have the flu, but I don't have a chunk of real wood to knock, so I'm not gonna say who!
