Oh Yes, It's Ladies Night!

I know I blog about my friends a lot, so I thought I'd let you know that my close "circle of 6" is spending the weekend here in Charleston.

They're coming in from Ohio early Saturday morning and my friend Julie is flying in from Tampa (she's complaining about the weather already!)  This is a group of ladies I have known since we were kids. Most are married with families now, but we get together every few months for some much needed "girl-time."

I have planned some fun events (most involve a lot of calories) so we should have a good time. I do admit that I have some frightening images on unleashing my group of thirty-somethings onto the innocent citizens of Charleston :) We tend to be a bit loud (a trait that will never go away no matter how old we are.)

I found a picture of all of us at our high school graduation and another one of us at a reunion we attended last spring when our school was shutting down. I wanted to post them but don't have any way to scan them right now. It's funny though to see the "now" and "then".

Anyone who graduated in the late 80's or early 90's will remember one thing. BIG HAIR. At our school it was always a competition to see who had the biggest and highest hair. We covered our ultra-permed locks in so much hairspray I swear there was a permanent cloud of sticky goo that hung over our school. Now that I think about it, we might be the reason behind global warming.

So, the pictures tell the story of young girls just getting ready to enter adulthood and then, us as adults (or pseudo-adults).  I can't say we've really changed that much. A few wrinkles, maybe a few extra pounds. New husbands, new babies. Older. Wiser. But one thing's for sure, the hair is SO much better.

Enjoy your weekend!

Jessica

04\10\08 Update! Here's the 1 picture from our weekend that wasn't embarrassing (:

Posted by: candi It was so funny to read this blog, it reminds me of my group of friends. I'm in my early 30's also but we always have such a great time together, Its like your in high school again. I remember the big hair we all had our favorite combs that would tease your hair just right, it was huge but the bigger the better. thanks for making me laugh and making me think of some great memories I had with my BFF's

Posted by: amy f Speaking of hair spray...remember RAVE in the greenish can? Now that stuff would hold up an army! After a football friday night back in 1994 my hair would be SO sticky. YUCK! And speaking of hair Jessica.....I like your hair with highlights in it. The darker ones do accent your features, but I just don't care for it. I enjoy watcing you to see what you have done with your hair. I am always changing mine as well!

Posted by: Anonymous I didn't fare well with the big hair, I do much better now. But the music was great.

Posted by: Marcy I had a blast ladies! It was so nice to get away and spend some quality time with the girls. Julie-some things have changed but the aerosol spray can will always hold true for people who have flat hair like me! Charleston was magnificent! Jess, thanks for all the planning, the fun and being a wonderful person!

Posted by: Julie Jessica, I have come to the conclusion that our group of 7 girls was the main contributor to global warming. Actually, Marcy sprayed enough aerosol hairspray last weekend to kill another layer of the ozone, and it's 2008! The weather wasn't all that bad, but I was pleased to get back to the sunshine in Florida. What a blast! Thank you, thank you for hosting us. It is fabulous to have a group of close friends that can pick up where we left off, even if we haven't seen each other for months. Next years destination for the girls get-together: Florida! Seriously, as much fun as I had in gray Charleston, you girls should really be coming HERE in the winter months.

Posted by: Phil You guys don't do anything I wouldn't do.....if you do get some good pics!!

Posted by: Anonymous if you guys get hammered, call a cab.....try not to get the male strippers!!!lol

Posted by: Jessica Ralston Dawn, your post just made me laugh out loud. We were talking about the different colored Aquanet cans this weekend! We remembered that it came in the pink and white can and also purple. We were also fans of the Aussie Sprunch spray that smelled like grapes. SO FUNNY!

Posted by: Julie Jessica, I just wanted to say that I got to hear all about you "Ladies' Night Out". I'm a coworker of one of your "circle of 6" at a school in Ohio. Sounds like you guys had a blast! As a graduate of the late '80s I can relate to the hair thing. The photos are almost frightening!! I enjoyed your blog!

Posted by: Dawn That's funny, I was just telling a "big hair" story the other day. I told about my cheerleading days when our squad went to greet the opposing team's cheerleaders before a game started and two girls hugged each other and their hair got stuck together. Only people who used Aqua Net in the white and pink can would ever believe that story to be true!! This was my first visit to your blog and I had to post this. Have a great day.

Posted by: Eric Sounds like lots of fun getting together with your old friends, just remember to stay safe so you can enjoy the memories with your friends in the future. I Graduated in the 80s too, so I am a fan of Big Hair!

Posted by: stacy How exciting for you and your friends to get together and enjoy each others company. So many of us loose touch with our good friends due to families, job and so on. So it's refreshing to see that you and your crew make a special effort to get together. And yes, I am a former big hair girl myself. I graduated in 91, and it was definatley all about how big your hair was. Thank goodness now it's just about smooth, silky, moveable hair. Hope you enjoy your time with friends. Cherish the moments.

Posted by: James I graduated in the late 80's too here in Charleston. That was the era of the "Big Hair Bands" Did you girls look like Bon Jovi or David Coverdale (Whitesnake)who date big hair girl Tawny Kitaen, or some of the other bands? Those were the days!
