Hey Potato, Get Off the Couch!

Question:  What do my running shoes, iPod Shuffle and Heart Rate Monitor have in common?

Answer: They're all collecting dust because they haven't been used since October.

Yes folks, for the last several months I have been the laziest woman alive. My pants are too tight and I refuse to look at the scale. Instead of whining and complaining, I am taking a proactive approach to getting in shape for spring. Here's the big bonus. It's all for a very good cause.

The Covenant House in Charleston is sponsoring a "Couch to 5k Challenge."  They're providing several weeks of free training to get everyone ready  for the annual Rainbow Run on May 31st.  It's a great way to get off the couch and into workout mode, while helping out the Covenant House at the same time.

Trainers will meet with us couch potatoes 4 times a week for 30 minutes of running\walking. A lot of people are volunteering their time to help out and it's wonderful motivation to get in shape and get involved.

The Covenant House is located in Charleston. It serves 300 people through its' AIDS program. We have a big team from WSAZ and My Z signing up for the race this year and we want to see you too!

The free training starts on Monday, March 31st.

Here's the lowdown on the registration fees for the actual race.

Registration is $20 if people pre-register, $25 on race day, $10 for kids under 18, and $5 to walk your dog (they're giving away free homemade doggie treats from Charleston Bread Company!)

Posted by: Run For Hope 5k and what better way to prepare yourself for this marathon than by running one in the beginning of may -- to see how your coming along, of course -- it's the "run for hope 5k" and it will be in huntington. you can run the 5k, or you can walk the 5k... and there will also be a kids one mile "fun run" and all of the money raised will go to hope unlimited to benefit the millions of street children in brazil. to register you can go to www.firstpreshuntington.org and there is a form on there... and ps. this is for a VERY good cause, so i encourage everyone to come out and participate (:

Posted by: anonymous my father who is 58 just finished a marathon in hawaii 26 miles yor never to old to stay in shape. he plans on running another one in october in columbus

Posted by: Frank I did the "Couch to 5K" plan before and I was surprised when I first ran 3 miles. There are some challenging days but you get rest days in between. I think your blog inspired me to get the running shoes back out as well. You sleep and feel better when you run regularly. Good luck to you Jessica!

Posted by: Mike I used to jog all the time...then I figured if I drove, I could get done a lot faster.
