Think Pink!

This Saturday thousands of people will converge on the Capitol grounds here in Charleston to walk or run in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

I could go on for days about why this is such an amazing event, but I'd rather have you there to experience it for yourself. Not only does this event raise money for breast cancer awareness, it's also a chance for survivors to share their stories,  their strength and their courage.

My Grandma Jean (mom's mom) lost a breast to cancer and battled other forms of the disease throughout her life. She died a few years ago simply because her body could not take it anymore. My Grandma Donna (dad's mom) lost both breasts to disease. Much to my relief, my mom is diligent about getting regular check-ups.  I actually had my first mammogram when I was just 27 years old. So clearly, it's an issue we don't take lightly.

Each year we usually have a few folks from WSAZ walk or run in the race, but this time around, it's a massive effort. We've organized a big team, had special t-shirts made and Penny Moss is serving as the race emcee. There has been a buzz around both of our stations in Charleston and Huntington this week and we are beyond excited. We know it will be fun. We also know there will be a few tears. But most of all, we hope you will join us.

Posted by: Bee Jessica you are great! My Mom has lost 1 breast already and possibly the other to come. We should know after tomorrow. The Dr's are doing a biopsy tomorrow to see if the lump is cancer or not. Me and my two sisters have our mammograms regularly.

Posted by: Penny Moss I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!!! You DID IT!! I know this event means a lot to you because of your grandmothers... and I can only imagine how proud they would've been to see you RACE across that finish line. :-)

Posted by: Chris It sounds like a great event, and it's for a good cause as well. I'm sorry about your grandma though, Jessica. I haven't lost any of my family to breast cancer, but I've had 5 family members die of different cancers like pancreatic, lung, colon, and brain tumors. I'm in college right now to become a nurse, but I really would like to go to medical school after I graduate and maybe specialize in Oncology. Cancer has hurt my family so much, and I just think I could make a difference in someone's life someday if I became a doctor. But I'm sure it will be a great event! I hope everyone who goes has a great time!

Posted by: Leeann I ran in the SGK Race for the Cure in Columbus, OH last year. It was the most inspiring and awesome race/event I have been ran. It was something to see those with cancer and survivors running, walking and riding. If you can't participate, at least go watch and sponsor a participant!

Posted by: Debbie If it wasn't for the fact that it's my oldest prom night, I'd be there with you, but I'm sure you remember how prom day and night is, it's an all day thing. So you go girl. I am sponsoring someone though, my sister also lost her right breast to cancer

Posted by: Citizen Sorry for loss of loved ones to breast cancer. It is a horrible dosesase and I am for finding a cure.

Posted by: Sue I had my first at 24 due to fibrocystic disease. What fun having it done at such a young age. Mine was a nightmare but I am glad I got it done.
