Cloudy with a chance of meatballs!

Updated: Thu 1:01 PM, Feb 11, 2010

That's what meteorologist Josh Fitzpatrick read to the first graders at Green Elementary in Franklin Furnace.

Recently I was invited to read to the first graders at Green Elementary in Franklin Furnace, Ohio.  I read them one of their favorite books, "Cloudy with a chance of meatballs."

If you haven't read the book or seen the movie, you must!

The book is about two children, Henry and his sister, who listen to their grandfather tell the story of the town of Chewandswallow, where the weather comes three times a day, at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is always food and beverages. The rain is juice and soup, the snow is mashed potatoes, and the wind brings hamburgers. Because of this phenomenon, there are no grocery stores. However, when floods and storms of giant food come, the population is forced to leave Chewandswallow on boats made of bread, and adapt to their new lives in our world where the sky doesn't feed you.

Below is a photo of myself and all the first graders and a couple of the teachers.

In the book, food falls from the sky on the towns people below.  In real life, I explained to them that sometimes tornadoes can pick up fish and frogs and then rain them back down over land!  It's true, that has happened before!

I can't stress on how important it is to get children interested in reading and books at young age.  These first graders' imaginations went wild while reading this book.

I want to thank Mary Howard for inviting me and keep up the great work at Green Local in Scioto County, Ohio!
