Comb-over

Look, it's not my plan to make Bennett appear as if he's trying to recapture his full-head-of-hair days. Especially since he hasn't even experienced them yet. I'm actually more than happy to give him a haircut. (Okay that's not entirely true. I'm not ready for yet another rite of passage to go flying by. But truly. It needs to be done.)

His hair is still baby-wispy, but if you can picture the way people styled their hair into wings in the early 80s -- well he could have them if I would just put a little mousse in the two long strands on either side of his head. Which I won't. But it is funny when he's in the bathtub to make him look like the guy from A Flock of Seagulls. It's just on the sides- the top and back are short and perfectly fine, but those two strips on each side of his head, well, they need to go.

But how can I possibly cut his hair when my video camera is broken?

You might think the only tool needed is a pair of scissors, but I require a little more. I just can't allow a momentous occasion to pass without proper documentation. In some cases it's acceptable to simply snap some still photos. But the first haircut? It needs to be captured on video tape. (AND still pictures, of course.)

I don't know if it was on It's A Small World or Pirates of the Caribbean, but somewhere during our trip to Disney World my video camera developed a problem. It won't work. Bottom line: Until I either get it fixed (I don't even know where to begin), get a new one (highly unlikely) or borrow one from WSAZ or something (think they would miss it?), the boy's comb-over will continue flapping in the breeze.

Posted by: Brandi I rolled when I read this post. I thought that my little 'nephew' (best friend's son) had the world beat with his satellite dish cowlicks. One faced front and one faced back. She used to swear that she could hear shuttle transmissions.

Posted by: Penny Hi Kygal-- I am cracking up over your comment! I hear a lot from the people I've known since I was a kid that I seem like a different person on the air than in person -- I'm all "serious newswoman"... I guess there's just not much opportunity to cut loose and be more myself on the air. But the truth is, in person I love to laugh and have fun. I even got "wittiest" in my high school yearbook. (Actually there were several of us who got that distinction.) I love having this blog so I can let more of the "real me" out. Thanks for reading and watching!

Posted by: Kygal Penny, I used to think you were a little stuffed shirt. Either since you have had your children OR started the blogs, you have become amazing like many other mothers. I love your humor about the children. A come-over at such a young age--what a hoot!! I like the side wings moussed back the best--straight from the 50's!!!Thank you for allowing us to get to know you outside the studio setting.

Posted by: Jessica Ralston I saw Bennett for the first time today in a few months and can only say that he is beyond beautiful and his hair is awesome! Plus he has a couple teeth now, so he's extra cool! Every time I see Penny's kids, they make my clock tick! They are truly great great kids.

Posted by: johanna I SO miss the birth hair - it was very hard for me to cut my daughters naturally occuring rat tail. Finally did - but I held out as long as possible!

Posted by: Penny Hmmmm... you raise an interesting point, anonymous! I'll have to ask my "shy haired" husband what he thinks of your theory. He might ban scissors from our home altogether!

Posted by: Anonymous LET BEN"S HAIR GROW!! You start cutting the hair and the hair begins to get the message that you really resent its' presence...eventually it believes you...it becomes self conscious...loses it's self esteem and begins to shy away from exposure. It experiences diminished passion for reaching out and tasting life in it's "fullest"! Then the slowing process begins and before long it just says "enough is enough"...it gives up...stops growing altogether, and leaves behind a graveyard of follicle ghosts...little spirits that never really move on because they've been "cut-off" unnaturally from thier destiny... defeated threads that might have otherwise grown to know the taste of wind at 65mph in a rag-top T-bird...or the romping, head twirling swirl atop a rocker on the verge of delirium while pounding out "Bohemiem Rhapsody"! On behalf of men with shy hair...whose Mom's took up the plight of harassing it as soon as it began to flow...LET BEN"S HAIR GROW!! ROCK ON BEN!!!

Posted by: you are so funny I just laughed out loud. At least your baby has hair!!! We have a blond fuzzy cue ball. It's still the cutest thing ever.
