Olympians All

It captures our imaginations every four years –citius, altius, fortius– the Olympic ideals of faster, higher, stronger, embodied in the triumph of the human spirit in extending the limits of physical performance.

As you watch The Games, isn’t there always a point when you wonder what would it be like to be there?

And as The Games go on, isn’t there always a point when you wish that you were there and part of it all?

If you answer yes, you are a lot like my husband Bob, one of the writers of this blog.

But if you are thinking, is he nuts?  Why would anyone want to trek half way around the world when you can see it all on streaming video, smart phone aps and a gazillion TV programs, you are more like Liz, the other writer of this blog. At least that’s what I thought 12 years ago during the 2000 Games, when Bob pointed out that if we kept driving our 1995 and 1998 Hondas for another 10 or 12 years, we could afford to go to the 2004 Olympics in Greece.

To make a long story short, our 1998 Honda just stopped running in May and we are on our way to our third Olympics.

We’re going to the Olympics. Yeah!

It’s not like this is the first time – we’ve been there twice before Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008. We even went to the site of the 1904 Games in St. Louis and to the site of the Sydney Games. To say that we are Olympic fans is an understatement. I came by my interest honestly because I taught Sport History at Marshall University for 35 years and for the last 20 years taught a course on the Olympics every four years.

In 2004 when the Olympics returned to Athens, I was excited. This was a chance to visit the country where the ancient Olympic Games were held and to visit the city and stadium where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896. It was too good an opportunity to pass up.

When Liz retired as a management professor at Ashland Community College, I realized the perfect way to celebrate her retirement and our anniversary would be a trip to the Olympics in Greece!

Our Blog

For the next few weeks you can join us as we travel to the Olympics and share our experiences in London.

Before we get to the Games, we’ll give you a Countdown to the Olympics – how we got tickets, found a place to stay and what we’ve learned as wily veterans of Olympics.

Bob will add some info about Olympic history and jock insights.

We’ll be sending daily posts from the Olympics from August 1 to August 7.  This will be the part of the Olympics that you won’t see on TV or hear about on the Today Show broadcasts -- the adventures of regular people.

Feel free to post comments and questions.

Liz and Bob
