West Virginia: "Safely Republican"

The latest poll from Rasmussen Reports out Friday shows not all is bad for the presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama in West Virginia.  A head to head matchup between Obama and presumptive Republican nominee John McCain shows McCain with a 45% to 37% margin over Obama.  The telephone poll counted 500 likely voters.

Both have notable negative ratings among voters -- McCain at 26% and Obama at 35%.

The margin of potential movement for Obama looks to be with the issue of the Iraq War.  The Rasmussen survey shows by a margin of 59% to 32% West Virginians feel it is more important to bring home troops safely than win the war.  The survey shows more West Virginians believe Obama is most likely to bring them home within four years.

Posted by: graydon I can't understand why some people would vote for a man who is in the begining stages of a mental problem,or just plain stupid,or possibly just lying to gain office.let's have someone who's ideas are good enough for the oher party to steal, who seems to have the whole country at heart, not just a few.

Posted by: MissyD77 Hello Everyone, I'm am a Hillary Clinton supporter. I volunteered for her campaign in the primary. Senator Obama does not speak for West Virginians. I will never support him. I have met up with a large number of people across the country that agree with me. I would liek to see more people from West Virginia to become members and post on the blogs there. Please join me at www.pumapac.org . We are a great group of people and we are making a diference before the convention in Denver. Just remember, Hillary still can get the nomination in Denver. Neither candidate recieved the number of pledged delegates that is needed for the nomination. We need to contact the superdelegates to explain to them that Hillary is our ONLY choice for the Democratice nomination. We will accept nothing less. I hope to see you all over at the PUMA PAC (People United Means Action) website. Sincerely, MissyD77 PUMA PAC Democrat

Posted by: james you people really think that being a POW gives you the evperince to lead a country? my grandfather is a korean war vet he said himself "you dont want mccain as your president" if you like the high gas prices, the husbands and fathers dyin in a war we shouldnt even be in then fine vote for mccain, and win the war keeps goin and mccain brings back the draft i dont wanna hear the cryin when its your family member sent home in a body bag.I cant believe that after 8 year of the idiot (bush) we have now, people would actually consider putting his little crony in office. good luck Obama

Posted by: Joe JZ cant even spell college..typical Democrat. Or maybe Obama'a degree is in making "collage's"

Posted by: john to jz,LIKE all obama supports,YOU HAD TO BE LOUD AND UNPLESSNT WHEN SPEAKING, osama is scary.McCain is not great but the best choice we have.

Posted by: JZ OBAMA MAY NOT HAVE TO HAVE W.VA, KY.OH TO WIN THE ELECTION SO WHO CARES WHAT YOU PEOPLE THINK.TO JOHN I AM SURE THAT WHEN OBAMA SAID 57 STATES I WAS A SLIP OF THE TONGUE,BOTH CANIDATES STAY UP FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME.OBAMA HAS A COLLAGE EDUCATION FROM HARVARD.I THINK HE KNOWS HOW MANY STATES THERE ARE, LOL

Posted by: Jennifer I don't swoon easily I just know good leadership when I see it. ;-)

Posted by: Joe Everyone is wasting their time with Jennifer. She is one of the girls passing out at the sight of Obama like he is one of the Beatles...Oohhh, he's soooo dreamy...

Posted by: Joe Quit taking everyones taxes and promising to take care of them. That is not what the government was supposed to do. We all would be better off to be given our tax dollars back and take care of ourselves. I am very familiar with the Federal government and if they are the answer to your problems, you are hurting. Their is way too much reliance on the government.

Posted by: Jennifer Whatever Frank. I actually care about the troops and their families. What's your excuse?

Posted by: Frank Jennifer appears to be continuing to spread the lie of omission about John McCain's 100 years comment re: Iraq. Sad.

Posted by: Jennifer My mother has switched doctors since then and they still said that she doesn't need the operation yet. She has such a hard time going up stairs and simply getting out of her chair. I feel so bad for her.

Posted by: Brian This democrat says, "Go McCain in 2008" & No to Nobama!!!

Posted by: bob could it be that the doctors are to blame rather than the insurance companies. after all if they wait longer there can be more damage done thus a bigger bill. the doctor is the one who writes up the report to the insurance company for surgeries and such, sometimes it is just a matter of how bad he wants to do it, not how bad your mother needs it. i would find a doctor that cared about his patients

Posted by: Jennifer So the answer is that we need something in-between. But we still have issues here where people are not being granted certain surgeries that are desperately needed. My mom for example lives with knee pain and needs surgery but her doctor won't approve it until she is in a wheelchair. She's been told this. I have 3 jobs and my husband has 3 jobs and we still can't afford $80 per week for health care. And I don't like the fact that those with pre-existing conditions aren't covered when they start a new insurance policy. It isn't fair to those of us who simply could not afford health care, come up with a condition and then can afford health care and need treatment. How can you call that fair? I don't go to the ER or the doctor everytime I have the sniffles. I know there will be a big doctor bill waiting for me that I can't afford. And I don't pray to someone who may or may not exist. If my life falls apart its because I've done something wrong or I've depended on someone I shouldn't have.

Posted by: bob socialized health care doesnt work. in this system only the sickest people are treated and people are pushed to the side until their conditions are serious. it is not a very successful system anywhere in the world. socialized health care will only cause the insurance companies to go out of business and create unemployment. corporations are hoping for this because they will no longer contribute to the employees health insurance programs. people cannot be denied health care - see the Hippocratic Oath. perhaps if poeple would not run to the doctor everytime they get the sniffles they could afford health care. if the united states were willing to turn their back everytime that genocide occurred we would be like the rest of the world. there would have been no involvement in WWII, bosnia, etc. we are the greatest nation in the world because we have everybodies back. everyone hates us until they need us. good luck in your life jennifer... who will you pray to when your life falls apart?

Posted by: jennifer Bruce I agree with you. I don't like McCain because his health care policy will leave people who have pre-existing conditions out in the cold. I don't like that he said he would stay in Iraq for 100 years if need be. I find that very unsettling. I also don't like the fact that McCain said he's going to take the "sit back and watch" approach to the economy and even said that he doesn't know as much as he should about the economy! He is also for drilling off shore which is ridiculous! It will take till around the year 2024 before we feel the effects of this drilling. By that time technology will have reduced our dependency on oil! And when we did feel the effects it will only be about .41 to $1.44 per gallon. However I do give him credit that he opposes drilling in ANWR. But that's just not enough to get my vote. To drive down gas prices we need to decrease our demand for oil.

Posted by: Jennifer its 50 states plus 7 US territories that voted. That's where he got the 57 states from. He was including the US territories. and I did vote for Obama in the primaries and I will vote for Obama in November. I don't like the war and I don't like McCain's healthcare plan because it would leave those who have pre existing conditions out in the cold. I also don't like the fact that McCain said he is going to take the "sit back and watch" approach to the economy. He even said so himself he didn't know enough about the economy. that is why I am voting for Obama and not voting for McCain. It has nothing to do with religion because I believe that religion should not be the main reason for voting for someone.

Posted by: Jennifer Your comment reeks of egocentric thinking and therefore I find you lost in your religion. You are not fond of the Muslim religion but you criticize them for not liking us. The crusades were carried out to take over the holy land and Christians used barbaric ways to fight their way there. This is why I don't claim a religion. I'm just going to sit back and watch you all fight amongst yourselves over who's religion is the right religion. I find it childish and narrow-minded. And before you go off and give me a lecture on the Bible just remember that whatever you say I've probably already heard a million times and even though it is burned in my memory I still choose not practice or fully believe in any faith. Mainly because of the fact that I am sick and tired of it being shoved in my face day in and day out by hardcore, and sometimes hypocritical believers. I'm not saying I don't believe in God I just have a belief of God with a more logical possibility of how he might exist.

Posted by: Bruce The topic of this blog was politics. Now the conversation has turned to religion. Why can't we keep these two topics separate? Who becomes President is not going to change any of you and your religious beliefs.Would anybody like to talk about healthcare or the economy?

Posted by: john And how can anyone ever vote for someone (obama) whom think's we have 57 states, now I may not be all that bright, being I from WV,but unless they added new states that's not right, lol

Posted by: bob the muslims you meet from day to day are very nice, but you dont seem to understand that the foundation of the muslim religion is hate. they are bitter because the hebrews are gods chosen people, and hate christians because of the alliance with the jewish community. it wouldnt be very beneficial to the muslim movement to where a bright red t-shirt that says im here to chop your head off. i am sure there are some who do not know their religion fully and practice it just as there are chrisitians. the crusades were carried out to build kingdoms, christianity was just a convenient reason.

Posted by: john Thank you bob!!!!I have been getting ganged on bye the Obama brain washed, black power movement, lol. If obama is voted in,there will be a chanage alright, the voices will be rubbed out.

Posted by: Jennifer Hey Bob, your faith apparently preaches ignorance and intolerance from what I read from your post. Did you not see my earlier posts? Obviously you know nothing about the Muslim faith. Do you personally know anyone who is a Muslim? If you do, have they carried out any rage or hate against you? And I guess the Christian Crusades was all about love. Please! The Christians chopped off people's limbs, raped women, cannibalized and murdered those who did not convert to the Christian beliefs during the Crusades. The Christians started the holy war against Muslims during the eleventh century. Stop being such an egocentric bigot. Christians have gotten better but there still are radicals out there just like Muslim radicals. But don't you dare for one minute put EVERY Muslim in the same category as those who attacked us on 9/11.

Posted by: bob the muslim faith ias far different from the hindu, buddhist and chrisitan faith. the muslim faith is the only one of the three that does not preach love. it preaches death to non-believers. please stop listening to what people tell you and taking it for the truth. the koran speaks of chopping of the head of the infidel, thats you jennifer.

Posted by: Jennifer I'm glad you didn't vote for Bush the second time John. :-)And I hope your sons return home safe from Iraq. I'll also be looking forward to seeing your comments on here in 2012. ;-)

Posted by: Jennifer Thanks Bruce! :-)

Posted by: John I voted bush the first time then kerry, those whom vote for chanage now are blinded bye unreal lie's.If we are still alive in 2012 and free to post on here,I will say I am sorry for doubting obama, but if my worst fears come true it wont matter we will be to busy trying to stay alive.

Posted by: Bruce Jennifer,I like your style!I always have to laugh when I hear someone connect Obama to Islamic terrorist. You have to go through a background check to work for Walmart.I think the background check to be President would be just a little bit more involved.John,Obama will be the next President. You can keep saying things like Hussain and Osama all you want,it won't matter.John, did you vote for G.W.Bush? Did you vote for him twice? Who has more connection to Bin ladin and the Bin ladin family?

Posted by: Jennifer I watched a special on television and they went to the school that Obama attended when he was a child and lived overseas. They interviewed teachers and old classmates of his. They also had an article on a news website that interviewed his grandmother who lives in Kenya. All of them said that he has never attended a Madrassa and his grandmother said that he did not embrace the Muslim religion. And if he did attend a Madrassa the government would have found out by now and not let him run for president. They would have found it to be not in the best interest of our country. And it wasn't Obama who wouldn't let the women sit behind him, it was his campaign people. If they did let them sit behind him and it was put on television a lot of Obama-haters would have taken it as confirmation of his alleged radical Muslim faith. He apologized to the women. Its not Obama or the women's fault that many Americans have a negative view of the Muslim faith and are uneducated on their faith.

Posted by: John Jennifer,In one of your early post you stated that you know for a fact! That Barry Hussain Osama, sorry ment Obama.never attened a radical muslim church. If you are not him how can you know that for a fact? And you tell me to get an education, lol. You remind me of my daughter in-law,except you have a higher ed.And what about this weekend when obamas people would not let 2 muslim women in their scarf's sit behind him because they didnt want him to be seen as supporting them.I think he say's one thing and means another.

Posted by: Jennifer I am a college student and I took a Race and Gender class that covered racism, sexism and discrimination against religious groups and ethnic groups which required knowledge of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. And I do have family and friends in the military.

Posted by: John Jennifer are you in coll or HS,you said you took a class about muslim's,but also chemistry,I hope there are no high school's teaching any type of relg.and if you had a family member in the army you may feel differntly.WV KY repbulican,OH maybe.

Posted by: Jennifer Who cares. I understand why he would lie. If you were running for the president and you knew your country wouldn't be accepting of a religion you would probably not want that information out. At least he didn't lie to start a war (Bush) and at least he hasn't flip flopped on important issues just to get votes (McCain). I personally don't care if he lied about it or not. His religion is not the most important thing to look for when choosing someone to run the country. And just because someone grew up in a Muslim environment doesn't necessarily mean that they embrace the Muslim faith. I grew up in a Christian home but I never embraced it then and I don't embrace it now.

Posted by: John And this has what to do with him lying to us?I am not now nor have i ever been a muslim

Posted by: Jennifer John get your panties out of a bunch. Do you know anything about being a Muslim? I just took a class and learned a little about the Muslim faith. And you'd be surprised that its not that different from Christianity or the Jewish faith. As a matter of fact its the same cast of characters; God (which they call Allah), Jesus, Mary and Joseph.. etc. Most Muslims are not even from Iraq or Iran. And a mosque is a church. We have them here in the United States. What you are thinking of is a Madrassa for the small group of radicals that we Americans are soooo familiar because the media and our government has only shown us that side of the Muslim faith. Instead of being so bigoted and believing that EVERY Muslim is a radical like the ones that attacked us on 9/11 why don't you do yourself and the rest of the world a favor and educate yourself on faiths other than the one you follow. you should also check out the No Religious Test Clause while you are at it.

Posted by: john And the truth come out today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They interviewed Barack hussain Obama's half brother Mailk and i saved the article. He was rasied MUSLIM and can recite the koran in arbic.he brother even attended a musque' (spelling) with him and his father in 1985.Obama has been lying through his teeth to us,alway's been a christian. This should let some air outta his sail's.He's no better than any other one running for pres.My sons dont need to come back home from fighting them over their and have to fight them here also.JMHO

Posted by: Bruce John,Obama voted not to go to war in the begining when it was an unpopular thing to do.I am sorry you and your sons are caught in the middle of this mess, but I can not let Bush get a free ride on this.He must be held accountable! We must never let future administrations abuse our democracy like this one has.It is time to wake up and take back our country. If nothing else Obama has energized the youth of America. Our future leaders are paying attention now.Republicans smeered Gore, they smeared Kerry and now they are smearing Obama.Frankly I am sick of it.The american people will no longer pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. What Zeitgeist.com...I dare you!

Posted by: Jennifer Here is info requested on how Bush lied to get into Iraq. http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0913-03.htm Why do some people seem to think that just because we want our troops home that we don't support them? I don't understand that. Just because we don't support the reason for war doesn't mean we don't support those who are fighting and risking their lives. And yes I like Byrd. He's had to have done something right in order to have been re-elected for as long as he has been. And yes we humans are a contributor to global warming. I have seen An Inconvenient Truth and we have discussed it many times in our chemistry classes. I have no doubt in my mind that we contribute to the rapid increase in global warming. And if you hate this area so much then why don't you move?

Posted by: John Obama want's troops out because it's popular, plus he can use the extra money to help support all his fav racist church's.Bush probably went to war with Iraq cause saddam threatin to kill Bush SR,I dont agree with the war even though I have 3 son's over there AGAIN.Obama want's war crime trial's etc.yea thats good for our young men and women to ponder.I go fight cause I was sent(even though you didnt send me)and now you want to degrade me and my service.Wake up people You may be in for some shocking things with him.Time to vote,I will just be like obama and say PRESENT.LOL

Posted by: Bruce Hi Sue,sorry for the assumption of you listening to fox and rush. The thing I like about Byrd is that he had the balls to stand up on the senate floor and oppose going to war with Iraq.I don't think humans are the sole cause of global warming but I do think humans contribute to this problem.Have you watched an inconvenient truth? It's OK to watch Al Gore and Michael Moore films to form an opion.I too call my self an independent. In a perfect world Ron Paul would be President. But as you know the choices in November are going to be McCain and Obama.I do not feel I am a mouthpiece for the Democratic party,I just think Obama hits the issues that are important to me.Iraq,Healthcare, poverty, and the environment.Have you watched the movie Zeitgeist yet? You can watch it on line.It will change your life.Yes Sue my mind is made up,but it took an open mind to get me here.I am the anonymous commentor,I must have forgotten to enter my name.

Posted by: Sue Actually, dear, I don't watch Fox news and I can't stand Rush. And I bet you all think that Byrd has just been GREAT for WV and that global warming is happening only because humans have caused it. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make them a conservative. That is a very narrow-minded way of thinking. If you have proof that Bush (oh, and that whole Congress thing just doesn't exist) went to war for oil, then provide it. I have a feeling we won't be hearing from you again. People, stop watching CNN and reading what verifies your own opinions. One great thing about being an independent, you don't end up sounding like a mouthpiece for whatever party you are supporting. God, I hate this area. Too many people who take what is spoon fed to them at face value.

Posted by: Anonymous Jennifer, you are right.Sue,you are wrong. If anyone thinks Barack is naive, then you need to read his book.Bush going to war for oil is not unfounded. There is lots of information to support this.Sue stop watching fox news and listening to Rush. They will poison you.Sue you are right about one thing. We do need to protect ourselves.Invading Iraq was not the way to do this.Staying there makes no sense. We are creating more terrorist than we can kill.Obama wants to get out of Iraq and spend that money on protecting our borders. He also wants healthcare to be affordable. Why does that scare you?

Posted by: Jennifer The Bush Administration fooled us into believing that the war in Iraq was necessary. That makes us the citizens of America naive. To go into Iran while we are still at war with Iraq is not only financial but political suicide. We had more allies before Bush took office. Bush is an oil company backer. So yes the war in Iraq had other motives than what the American citizens were told. You say there are people out there who want to kill us. Well duh! But starting our own wars just sends the message out that we are out for blood as well. We drag the rest of the world into our messes. McCain is not a centrist. He has flip-flopped on issues since running for president. So no matter what you say I'm not going to vote McCain. He is not what I stand for! I want our troops home, I want countries on our side, and I want gas prices to go down. Starting a war in Iran is DEFINITELY NOT going to achieve that goal for us!

Posted by: Sue Jennifer, the US has never had a great reputation. No matter what or who was or is in office, there are groups out there that hate us and want to kill us. No matter what we do, they will always hate us. What "Holy Oil War"? I have never heard of that. I know there are extremist on the left who make the unfounded claim that the Iraq War was about oil but once again, the operative word is unfounded. Obama is too naive. I don't think he has a grasp of reality and that scares me. If you objectively look at McCain, you will see he is very much a centrist. Please back up the comment "McCain wants to start more trouble in other countries..." We need to protect ourselves as this world is not one big sing along.

Posted by: Jennifer I will be voting for Barack Obama come November. I agree that he will be the one to bring our troops home safely. McCain wants to start more trouble in other countries and with our troops still in Iraq it would be a bad choice. Our troops are tired, our families are tired, and our country cannot financially afford another war. When are we, the American people, going to have the attention of our government back? It seems like the only thing the Republicans are concerned with is their Holy Oil wars! The Republicans are bankrupting us and dragging our once good reputation trough the mud. Other countries think we are greedy, egotistical, and shallow. Its time we make peace for ourselves and take responsibility for our actions (environmental, health care, etc.) so the world will start to look at us again in a positive way.

Posted by: john No obama,I can take 4 more years of republican, but not obama.
