When I covered the West Virginia legislature more regularly, some of my fellow reporters and I would joke about how legislators could stand up and say they would not raise taxes.  But fees?  Well, that's a different story.  Hike the fees.  Those aren't taxes!

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones and his surrogates told us for months when the user fee first came out that it was a FEE and not a tax!

You might as well spell tax with four letters in politics.  (Hey--maybe Joe Biden does?) It's a taboo word.

So, today when the Shelley Moore Capito camp sent out word that Anne Barth -- in their words -- "doesn't think she has to pay her own taxes" the Barth camp got upset.

The proof?  Three liens filed in the Kanawha County courthouse against the Barth family.  They have all since been paid.

Capito's camp says Barth has a do as I say and not as I do approach to paying taxes.

Barth's camp says the issue is about fees.  Barth's husband is self-employed and has a fluctuating income, so he has to make amends quarterly on his tax bill.  But that doesn't explain why two of the liens from 2000 and 2002 weren't paid until this year.  The Barth camp didn't offer thoughts on that.

The Barth camp does bring up a point.  They say Capito's people are going negative out of desperation.  I don't know if it's desperation, but it certainly is one of the first negative attacks made in this mostly issues-based campaign.  Republicans used a similar campaign against Jim Humphreys, Shelley's first opponent for Congress, successfully several years ago.  It does help drive up the negatives, as pundits like to discuss.

It's interesting Capiol firt office was in the west virginia House of Delegate, and Barth hasn't ran for an office that I know of. Captol Cares for the people of West Virginia

Why the people of West Virginia must vote for Obama. It’s not a vote for Obama, not a vote against McCain but a vote for Senator Byrd. Tuesday’s election could likely be the Old Crow’s last Presidential Election as a United States Senator. Harry Reed wants to remove Byrd as HEAD of Appropriations to a seat on that committee. This would not be happening if we were voting “Blue”. It is time to pay Robert Byrd back for all that he has done for our state. What The Senate Democrats are saying is...If Byrd can’t deliver West Virginia for the Democrats then West Virginia looses Byrd’s clout. We need to show the senator how much we appreciate his years of being our “father”. We must deliver our Democratic state to the Democratic Presidential candidate or we loose Byrd’s power. That, we as a State can ill afford.

Sorry but I have seen some negative campaigning out of the Barth camp. Seriously though, since Barth has zero political experience beyond being Byrd's secretary, it would be nearly impossible to dig up dirt about her except of the personal kind. And desperation is a laugh. Capito has this one in the bag. It will be an honest miracle if Barth wins. Aren't they supposed to debate at some point? Barth going up against a seasoned politician will be a bloodbath.

Go Capito, bring out all the dirt! You are better than tide. Of course there is more you could say, the fact that she has campaigned with dirt should be proof enough that she is a dirty demo. Go MCCAIN, Go CAPITO, Go REPUBLICAN's all the way, and God (Jehovah) bless WV and the USA. I don't even want to say 4 more, I want to say 8. Go Grand Ole party, go!
