The Biggest Game of the Year

What separates Sunday night’s Marshall game from any other this year?  Certainly it won’t have the hype of the Friends of Coal Bowl against West Virginia, not the intrigue of a game against Miami in the Orange Bowl.  However I think the game against Southern Miss is the biggest game of the year for the Herd.  Should they be able to get a win and get off the schneid, it would propel them into Homecoming against Rice with some momentum and give them a real chance at two in a row and gain some much-needed confidence.

Right now the Herd is 0-6, and the staff, fans, and players are getting restless.  Getting close is not enough midway through this season.  If Marshall loses, it ensures the Herd’s 3rd straight losing season and takes out any hope of a bowl game.

One thing I can say for certain.  The players haven’t quit yet, not by any means.  As I stood on the field at Chapman Stadium in Tulsa Oklahoma Saturday night and interviewed the players, not a single one didn’t think the train’s heading in the right direction.  In other words, they didn’t talk like a winless football team.

They have some reason for optimism.  The defense finally generated some heat on the quarterback (a talented Paul Smith), held a powerful Tulsa offense to just 7 points in the second half, and scored more points (31) than they have against any conference USA opponent on the road since they joined the league.

Southern Miss is the most successful and consistent winning team in Conference USA since they entered the league in 1996.  A Marshall win would go a long way to helping salvage a rough year.

Posted by: to frustrated fan good teams from Marshall could win in the 90's..............Div2 they thought they could play with the big boys, and moved up a notch. I guess they are getting a dose of reality, they are smalltime,Marshall is a good school, but players can get that elswhere.Huntington doesn't have alot to offer in the scope of things.Better players want more

Posted by: mike Keith - when do you think Marshall will seriously look at replacing Coach Snyder? He is 9-21 and if the train is heading in the right direction then I must be missing something.

Posted by: Frustrated Fan We need a new coach and these guys look like they are confused and don't know how to play. Why doesn't the quarterback throw the ball and why can't the other players catch it? I am frustrated that we went from having such good teams in the nineties and could pretty much guarantee that they were going to win. I will die a HERD FAN...but let's get it together!

Posted by: Dragnet Can we say 0-7 ? Eventually Marshall will lose alot of its fanbase, winning fills the stands, sells the merchandise. I guess the current coach will soon be history....can Marshall be moved back to Div 2?? at least they can win there

Posted by: Dragnet just the facts please......fact is Marshall should have remained a Div 2 school and played the patsies

Posted by: Bob I'd go a head and get ready for the losing season because there is no chance that Marshall will win. If they win a game period, I'll be surprise.
