Now that the Heisman Trophy votes have been counted and
Florida ’s Tim Tebow became the first sophomore ever to win the award, I thought it would be appropriate to reveal my votes. Before I do that, let me say that each year, it’s still one of the honors of working in this profession, when the Heisman Trophy Trust sends out the annual ballot for college football’s most prestigious honor. Most every one of us who has a vote takes it very seriously. As the season progresses, it becomes important to watch as much football as you can and pore over the statistics of the best players in the land.
Make no mistake about it, a lot of the Heisman Trophy vote still centers around a popularity poll. I thought Central Florida’s Kevin Smith deserved a shot to go to
New York . All he did was roll up 2,448 yards, the second highest total in Division 1-A history behind Barry Sanders. But it still is an award that usually goes to the best player from the biggest schools.
Still after much thought, my ballot went like this:
#1-Tim Tebow
Florida QB
#2-Darren McFadden
Arkansas RB
#3 Pat White WVU QB
I thought Tebow’s numbers of 51 touchdowns (passing and running combined) was an incredible statistic---onethat had never been achieved at this level of football. Without Tebow…
Florida might have lost three more games. McFadden certainly separated himself from the pack as the best running back in and certainly the number one NFL tailback prospect. Pat White was simply the heart and soul of
West Virginia ’s football team. Without him, I don’t believe WVU would be playing in the Fiesta Bowl this year. He single-handedly led them to wins this year.
There was some controversy about a sophomore winning the award. Quite simply, the 35-pound trophy is supposed to be awarded to the most outstanding football player in College Football. I think Tim Tebow was that player this year.
