The last time West Virginia ventured to Huntington to play Marshall in
Huntington ….they won the game over the Thundering Herd 92-6. Of course, that was back in 1915, and Marshall’s only score that day was on a now-outlawed
Tower
Pass. A
Marshall receiver actually got on the shoulders of a teammate to catch a pass in the end zone. There will be a bigger variety of offensive formations and a whole lot more people watching this Saturday when the Friends of Coal Bowl kicks off at Edwards Stadium.
The game is a sellout and WVU brings a #3 national ranking into the game, along with two Heisman Trophy candidates in Pat White and Steve Slaton.
On the surface,
West Virginia looks like the 23 and a half point favorite it is. They scored 62 points against Western Michigan while Marshall lost 31-3 at
Miami .
But football is a funny sport sometimes and Marshall must feel somewhat challenged to be dismissed that quickly by the oddsmakers. For the Herd to have a shot, they’ll have to shorten the game by getting some first downs and scoring touchdowns as well. If not, WVU’s point a minute offense could quickly wear down
Marshall ’s defense.
The Herd will be out to prove it can be competitive in this newly revived series, while WVU will be out to once again impress the pollsters. Saturday will bring a stadium record crowd, and hopefully, those who come will feel like they got their money’s worth.
