Storm Clouds Dazzle in Eve Sky

Updated: Sat 11:47 PM, Aug 21, 2010

Tornado Wannabees

Thanks to Tadd Wallace for sending along the enclosed digital picture of the sinister storm clouds over Wayne County this evening. That's a funnel cloud in the making, a tornado wannabee!

There have been some neat cloud formations this Saturday evening across the region courtesy of the tropical climate that has returned.

Dark, menacing thunderheads have billowed up in the steamy heat of late afternoon and have been responsible for brief heavy downpours and a few lightning strikes. Since the storms have been of the hit and run variety, only some nuisance street flooding has been reported especially in Southern Ohio. Meteorologist Josh Fitzpatrick tells me travel along state route 35 through Jackson Ohio has been slow with some people pulling off the road to wait it out.

In downtown Huntington, sister downpours fell 2 hours apart. The first came on the northern flank of the Wayne funnel storm around 7. The second flooded the viaducts and sent Picnic with the Pops fans scurrying for cover.

Among the more interesting reports I have received, our viewers in Northern Wayne County are convinced they saw some rotation in the clouds. Rotation is of course a sign a cloud wants to spin into a tornado.

I am sorting thru the cloud pictures that our intrepid e-reporters are sending in. I will share the best with you on MY Z 10 and NEWSCHANNEL 3 at 11.

Since the afternoon winds aloft have been light and in a linear motion, any quick spin up aloft was destined to fade. In order to produce a big tornado, winds must be fast aloft and somewhat contorted. The contortion refers to a change in wind both in speed and direction as one climbs into the heavens.

The tropically humid air responsible for this evening's storm shenanigans will be slowly pushed away on Sunday. So after the steambath fog of dawn burns away, any morning shower that is leftover will give way to a drying and warming Sunday afternoon sun.
