Hay Fever Season is Here!

It's crunch time for hay fever sufferers as the spring tree pollen season ramps up. Tony has the wheezing and sneezing story.

Pollen Alert This Weekend

One good effect of all the damp and chilly weather this spring focuses on the relative benign tree pollen season. It seems every spurt of tree pollen has been arrested by a new spell of cold and wet weather. The damp chill in effect has squashed the stuffings out of tree pollination.

Don’t get me wrong, there have been high tree pollen days. But the lack of a long warm, sunny and windy spell has kept the seasonal pollen count from soaring to stratospheric levels.

Now however, trees are quickly greening and even the maple and oak trees are showing signs of the rebirth of the season. Soon a yellow film of oak pollen will coat our cars. That will mark the height of the spring tree pollen season.

In the short term, tree pollen levels will rise dramatically Friday, Saturday and even Sunday. With the maple and oak doing the main dirty work, I would expect a season peak (so far) to occur with pollen counts soaring into the 500 grain per cubic foot range by the weekend.

What does that 500 number mean? Well during the damp and cold days of dogwood winter recently, pollen levels have held below the 50 grain per cubic meter value needed to begin allergic reactions. Numbers as low as 10 have been common this week. 100 is considered high so a 500 level will be 5 times higher than high.

It is possible the count will reach 1000 by Sunday if rains hold off long enough.

By the way, another spell of dogwood winter will put the k-bosh on the pollen count early next week, though warm and sunny weather late week should climax with the season’s highest levels by next weekend. I would expect those 1000 counts I mentioned above next weekend.

Ha-chew!
