Flood Risk Heightens

Another night of flooding is on tap. TC says the high water risk is area-wide, not localized this time.

12 AM Update

Drenching downpours soaked then flooded parts of the Coalfields earlier on Thursday. Police told me that the Sidney area of Pike County was hardest hit and Chris Bailey's blog network uncovered the likes of road wash outs, water in homes and a few "fast water rescues" in Pike County.

Sherry Castle tells me the Martin County Fair was a muddy quagmire after the deluge and the carnival never opened.

Across the Tug River, EMS personnel told me a mudslide had occured in Thacker Hollow near Matewan, while nuisance high water had submerged part of route 52 in Justice.

Gilbert Creek withstood the 3 inch deluge with minor problems.

For the overnight hours, the main storm train is targeting Southern Ohio and Central WV, so some high water would be possible thru Jackson, Vinton, Gallia, Meigs and Lawrence counties in the Buckeye State with Jackson and Mason candidates for local flooding in WV.

Flash Flood Alert

A serious flood threat is unfolding across the region as a new round of heavy rains is moving into the region.

Many areas will get a fresh one to two inch deluge this evening with locally higher amounts. So another night of viaduct and street flooding is likely and this go-round, small streams are likely to spill out of their banks.

My best advice is two-fold. If you live along a stream prone to flooding, monitor water levels frequently and be prepared to seek high ground if flood waters approach. Secondly, much of the high water will be coming at night when vision is poor. Under that circumstance it is all the more imperative that motorists avoid the temptation to cross a flooded road.

As of 5 PM, we are hearing of flash flooding with mudslides and water rescues in Pike County Kentucky near Millard.
