Hail Caesar, Ice Fell from the Skies

Updated: Mon 8:58 PM, Jul 20, 2009

Scattered thunderstorms with hail formed in the heat of afternoon on Monday. Tony says they won't be the last of the week.

Summer Hail Storms Shower Coalfields

The gorgeous tropical skies overhead today were more typical of southern climes like Key West and Puerto Rico than Logan and Ashland. These heavenly skies featured a dazzling display of alto-cumulus castellanes clouds. Translated literally, “castles in the sky” towered heavenward by afternoon painting turrets of billowing white on the horizon.

If you flew thru these clouds on your way into or out of our airports, you felt a bump or two as these clouds were growing heavenward.

Amidst these giant cauliflower shaped clouds, warm July sunshine shone nicely at fairgrounds in Milton, Wellston and Cottageville. Talk to 4Hers and future farmers of America at these venues and you will hear the tale of a rare comfortably warm day in the show areas.

But while temperatures were making a run at 80 here at ground level, it was abnormally cold in the heavens above. Take the freezing level for example. On a normally hot July afternoon, that level (where the temperature drops to 32 Fahrenheit) sits between 12 and 15 thousand feet.

Not today, when the freezing level held near the 10,000 foot level. That meant any water at or above 10,000 feet was turning into ice.

Now when afternoon thunderstorms formed in the Coalfields (Pike, Martin, Mingo, Logan Counties), the updrafts that support these demons carried raindrops above the 10,000 foot level. This resulted in rain freezing into ice and a series of hail showers and even storms.

Given the expected thunder pattern the rest of the week, my suspicion is I will be showing and posting more hail pictures on WSAZ Newschannel 3, MY Z and WSAZ.COM.

Action will be widely scattered on Tuesday but super active with hail and strong winds in storms on Wednesday.
