Legend of Moonville Brakeman
There is a legend in Vinton County that is especially prominent on Halloween. Back in the late 1800s, a drunken railroad brakeman was alleged to have slouched over the tracks in Vinton County.
When a train came roaring thru, this railroad man was mangled. Since this would-be mauling was to have occurred on All Hallows Eve, the legend is especially spooky.
Saturday night just before Sunset, THE LEGEND OF THE MOONVILLE BRAKEMAN will be relived at the Lake Hope Furnace as the culmination of Roar Day 2009. Bet more than one kid will be crying from fright.
The legend is the Ghost of the Brakeman comes to life every year on Halloween.
ROAR DAY
Saturday is ROAR DAY at Lake Hope as the annual Rural Ohio Appalachian Revisted Festival sets up shop with the Hope School and Furnace hosting this neat event.
From quilting to blacksmitting and from crafting to wood carving, the event is a celebration of our Appalachian heritage. Mountain music and mouth watering local foods and confections will keep park visitors in a festival spirit even through the morning rain. Can you smell the beans and cornbread and sassafras tea now?
Odds favor a drying and cooling afternoon trend as temperatures wind up near 50 after noon.
For the kids, the clippity clop of horse drawn hayrides will highlight a memorable afternoon.
ROAR DAY begins at 9 and runs til 5. Meet at the Hope Furnace and School for most events. Events are free, but donations are welcome!
