Football Frenzy in Cold Wheeling

Three local teams have a shot at glory this weekend in Wheeling. Tony has the chilling forecast.

Wheeling Football Weather

Let me be honest! In my 22 years of living here in West by God Virginia, I have come to realize that local sports fans are as passionate as they come.

From the early days, I followed the C.K. Wonders and coach Lutz’s Fighting Tigers. I marveled at the tradition of the band at old Charleston high and savored in the moments at venerable Putnam Stadium in Ashland and historic Spartan Stadium in Portsmouth.

It’s no wonder that I am dedicating this blog to the 3 local teams who have made it all the way to the WV state finals in Wheeling.

First off, in case you did not know it, the Oglebay Park Christmas Lights display in Wheeling is rated among the top 100 International events by Eventcrazy.com. So by all means if you are in the Pioneer, Hillbilly or Black Eagle traveling fan base, by all means allow extra time during your stay in Wheeling to enjoy a true piece of Americana.

OK, you want to know the weather for the title games. Just last year, the South Charleston Black Eagles won the class AAA championship on a cold and snowy afternoon in the Northern Panhandle of WV.

Well this year, it appears the snow this weekend will miss Wheeling. So while Wayne, Man and South Charleston cities may see a coating of snow on Saturday, it should be just partly cloudy and cold in Wheeling.

The Wayne Pioneers will play in the cold first. Your Friday night game with the Bluefield Beavers will feature a kickoff temperature of 30 with just a light wind. The Red Regime will march at halftime when the temperature will drop into the mid 20s. Layered warm weather attire and blankets are recommended.

Saturday afternoon is the dream match of the decade as the defending AAA champs from the Mound put their title on the line against northern powerhouse Brooke. The Black Eagles and Bruins are no strangers to cold weather so I see the sub-freezing air as no big deal for the teams.

Saturday night’s Class A title game will find the Hillbillies banging heads with Madonna. A stiff North breeze will make this the coldest of the championship trio of games.

So here’s to a cold weekend at Wheeling Island Park and to three possible state champions come Monday’s school bell.
