End in Sight for Bitter Blusters

One last snowfall to endure before the January Thaw takes hold. Tony says our patience will finally be rewarded.

January Thaw in Sight

The peanut gallery on First at 5 had just finished cackling at Bill Murray. Turned out Sir Bill spent a frigid weekend in the not so sunny Sunshine State of Florida. Rumors of snow flurries near Miami and frozen citrus and strawberry crops were confirmed on the 5 as Carrie Cline and Chris Bailey bantered with Bill about his trip.

Bill reports he missed the flurries but his car temperature registered 33 in the afternoon on Saturday at Daytona Beach.

So extensive has the cold been that snow is on the ground this Monday evening as far south as Georgia. At one point this weekend, 60% of the USA had snow on the ground.

This Monday evening, still another arctic front is passing with snow showers. A fresh coating will hide frozen slush (ice) for the Tuesday morning commute. I expect a quick half inch to inch of snow overnight, so road crews will be called out to make the morning drive safe. Schools will delay again (those that haven’t already closed).

Tuesday will feature off and on flurries amidst periods of sunshine and cold blusters from the northwest. Temperatures will hover all day between 25 and 30. The wind chill on exposed skin will be in the teens.

Then watch out Tuesday night! Where skies clear, readings will tumble thru the teens. Sunrise Wednesday will feature near zero degree cold in the mountain hollows with downtown temperatures near 15.

What happens after that will make even the staunchest of winter haters happy. For the first time in 3 weeks, the wind flow will veer around to the south on Wednesday when temperatures will make a run at 35.

That’s right, we are predicting our first above freezing temperature since New Years morning! Halleluiah!

While that is hardly worthy of the term thaw, by Thursday and Friday temperatures will soar into the 40s as many see green grass for the first time in 2010.
