Ohio and Kanawha Rivers

The Kanawha and Ohio are running high. Tony translates the Sunday afternoon data from the NWS.

Sunday PM Rivers Update

Interests along the Mighty Ohio be advised, the river will be approaching flood stage through the Greenup and Meldahl Pools (from Gallipolis Ferry thru Portsmouth) Sunday afternoon thru Tuesday morning.

Predictions from the hydrologists at the National Weather Service are for crest levels to be near or slightly above flood stage. In effect, low lying areas prone to high water will be under water, but serious flooding is not expected.

In the Byrd pool (Gallipolis Ferry to Pt. Pleasant), the river will be out of its banks and in flood especially at Point Pleasant. Road closures are likely in low lying areas, but the city of Point Pleasant will not need to use the flood wall system for protection.

Upstream toward Pomeroy and then into the Racine and Belleville pools, water flowing down from Pittsburgh will keep the river high but mainly below flood stage. Pomeroy will not see Main street swamped like it did twice in 2 weeks in 2004. Good thing since Pomeroy does not have a flood wall.

On the Kanawha River in the Winfield pool, the crest has past Charleston (29’ early Sunday morning) and the river is falling slowly. Magic Island and Haddad Riverfront Park will be able to claim dry ground (muddy in the case of Magic Isle) again by Monday.

From Winfield downstream to Point Pleasant, the crest will be slowed due to back water from the Ohio.Again low lying areas will be flooded.

It will be late week before the rivers settle down to a more typical March level.
