Good Friday Hits 90 Degrees

Updated: Fri 9:53 PM, Apr 02, 2010

Easter weekend is off to a hot start this Good Friday. Tony puts the heat into perspective and looks ahead to the weekend.

Near 90 Heat Ushers in Easter Bunny

Late this Friday afternoon a rare event has occurred in Charleston. The temperature has hit 90 degrees, breaking the record high which dated back to 1946. As of 4 PM Huntington’s temperature was safely below 90 at 87.

The novelty of 90 this early in the season centers on the fact that since record keeping began in the early 20th century in Charleston, only 3 other years can boast of a 90 degree day before April 2.

The early season heat has turned on the flora of the region with explosive power. “The weeping cherry trees have gone from a bud to full bloom in just 3 to 5 days, amazing”, said Meigs County Extension agent Hal Kean. “But the heat is also a problem for early flowers like the daffodils. They will be more apt to see their petals fall off with the next rain”, Hal added.

As for your weekend forecast, more cloud cover on Saturday will hinder the temperature rise after the lunch hour, so highs will top out at 80 for Easter egg hunts. By late day, a cool front will pass with gusty winds and a passing sprinkle. That shower in the 5 til 9 pm time frame should not be enough to hinder Easter vigil church services planned around the region.

By Easter Sunday, sunshine and low 70s will be perfect for the wearing of those bonnets.

One cautionary word worthy sounding; Saturday will be a windy and warm day so the risk of brush fires spreading will be high. Best to refrain from burning until our next rain since our foresters would prefer to have Easter dinner with their families rather than be out fighting fires accidentally (or purposely) set by a careless match. DO NOT BURN until we get rain. ‘Nuf said!

Here’s your Easter Sundial data from my last blog, and Happy Easter!

The Easter calculation comes in 3 easy steps.

Step #1 When did spring begin? March 20th at 1:32 PM.

Step #2 Find the first full moon after the spring equinox. Tonight, March 30.

Step #3 The First Sunday after the full moon that follows the equinox is Easter. April 4.

As for church services, many churches have both Easter Vigil (at sundown Easter Saturday) and Easter Sunrise services to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Using the Charleston WV sundial, sunset Easter Saturday night is 7:51 and Sunrise Easter Sunday is 7:08. Those numbers will vary by a minute or 2 depending on where you live.
