Tree Pollen Peaking

Our cars are filled with the yellow fallout from oak pollen. Tony sneezes and blogs his way thru the pollen explosion.

Tree Pollen Explosion

If you are wheezing and sneezing these days, there is a very good reason for the sniffles. Trees are pollinating up a storm in the unusually dry April weather.

The fallout of yellow oak pollen that has “repainted” our cars is a dead give away that the peak of the season is upon us. Pollen levels in the Ohio Valley are running 3 to 5 thousand grains per cubic meter these days.

Now don’t get caught up in the mathematics of pollen counts. All you need to know is 100 is high so 3000 is 30 times higher than high.

Friday evening rains will cleanse the air of the excessive pollen and cooler air this weekend will keep the clamps on new pollinations, at least in super high quantities.

So I expect the highest tree pollens of the season thru Friday, then a dramatic drop by the weekend.

Here’s a different tidbit on the dry April front. The month known for showers is doing its best to please sun worshippers while at the same time annoying gardeners and landscapers. The former are lathering up with sunscreen while the latter are watering lawns and flower beds.

Of course a dry April-May is a dead give away to a hot summer. The drier that 8 week period, the hotter it will be. Right now I will allow for a moderate May of rain and predict 25 ninety degree days this summer. That would be 5 times as many pool days (90 degree highs) for the kids this summer compared to 2009 (5 days), but 50% less than the brutally hot summer of 2008 (more than 50 days in the 90s).

I will update the summer forecast as we wind our way thru the rest of spring.

By the way, I have been gathering all sorts of beautiful tree shots this spring and will use them in my weekly story on First at Five on Friday.
