Watching Heavens for Evening Boomers

It's a hot, breezy and humid spring afternoon. Tony says that combination could lead to some wind storms close by.

Tornado Watch for Some

6 PM Radar Update

Nary a single cell on radar as the dry air aloft is inhibiting thunderstorm development. Single cells did form into brief thunderheads in Scioto Ohio and Lawrence Kentucky around 4 PM. Those squalls no longer exist.

So I would expect a quiet evening that is good for little league games with the risk of severe weather much smaller than originally touted.

4 PM Radar Update

A few pop up thunderstorms have indeed bubbled up in the past hour. A quick burst of wind and rain with the crackle of thunder seems the most likely event this evening for parts of the region. Since cells are moving so fast, I would not expect little league games to be rained out. Most showers will last less than 30 minutes.

The first Tornado Watch of the spring for our area affects people living in Southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky. The watch runs until 9PM as issued by the National Weather Service.

Here’s what you need to know. During a storm watch, it is best to keep the kids playing close by, “within shouting distance”. That may seem odd but during a storm watch, the sun is often out for long hours with nothing going on. Having the kids inside on a warm spring afternoon would drive you and them crazy.

In the event a warning for severe weather is issued, or if you see/hear a thunderstorm nearby, then you would have ample time to get the kids inside and out of harm’s way.

In this particular case, the risk of severe weather increases substantially as you travel the AA highway toward Cincinnati and the Appalachian highway from Chillicothe to Cincy. This area will likely see hail and high wind storms.

Check out our Interactive Radar link here at WSAZ.COM for an up to the minute storm view and use the Futurecast to track the future movement of any severe cells.
